Though Beyond Meat uses a different method to mimic meat flavors, the potential health risks are still worth noting. Moreover, while a beef patty has one ingredient—beef—a plant-based patty can have up to 18, many of which are unfamiliar and highly processed. To match beef's nutritional profile, additional nutrients must be fortified into the mix, making these patties far from natural. The Ugly Processing is another major issue. The production of plant-based meat often involves high-temperature extrusion technology or other methods that expose proteins to thermal and mechanical stress, which can degrade the nutrients in the food. Conclusion So, is going vegan a good thing? Absolutely, especially if it’s for social and environmental reasons. Avoiding dairy with alternatives like chia seeds and oil is easy and worthwhile. But when it comes to plant-based meat, I’m not convinced. Despite their environmental benefits, these products are highly processed and may not be as healthy as they appear. As Mark Bittman, a New York Times best-selling author, wisely puts it: “The truly healthy alternative to a processed chip is not a fake chip, it’s a carrot. Likewise, the alternative to sausage is not vegan sausage; it’s less sausage.” After my research, I’m recalibrating my approach—opting to make my own burger patties from whole foods like grains, legumes, seeds, and nuts. My recommendation? Don’t stop eating meat if you enjoy it, but do so in moderation. Be discerning when choosing vegan products: check the labels, count the ingredients, and watch the sodium content. We all carry stories of when someone believed in us—and of when they didn’t. The words that either lift us or flatten us tend to stay. Whether you’re a student, a parent, a professional, or someone trying to find your voice, encouragement matters more than we often realize. Especially in our formative years—when belief from someone else becomes the bridge to believing in ourselves. Mental wellness, at its core, isn’t just about calm or clarity. It’s also about emotional safety. Feeling like you have the right to try. To fail. To create. To speak. And often, that right is shaped by whether someone told you that you could. Why This Matters—for All of Us Recent research backs this up. A longitudinal study in Development and Psychopathology (Masten et al., 2004) found that children who receive consistent emotional support from adults develop significantly more resilience in adolescence and beyond. Another meta-analysis in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence (Raposa et al., 2019) found that mentoring relationships are linked to improved emotional wellness and lower anxiety—even years later. And it’s not just emotional. It’s neurological. Being seen and supported literally reshapes the brain toward confidence, not fear. That support doesn’t always come. And when it doesn’t, the silence can echo for decades. I know. Because I’ve lived it. My Story: The Idea No One Thought Was Worthwhile Growing up in India, I had a brain wired for ideas. And while today we’d probably call it creative problem-solving or design thinking, back then, it was just… inconvenient. Rote learning ruled the classroom. Structure was king. And in one of my final years before I moved to the U.S. for graduate school, she gave us a project: invent something new. Finally, I thought. A chance to think differently. I came up with a two-in-one hairbrush and hair dryer. For someone with my thick, wavy, unmanageable hair, it would have been life-changing. I was proud of it—not just the practicality, but the creativity. I knew it solved a real problem. And I received the lowest grade in the class. Her comment? “Not practical. Feels impossible.” This was the year 2000. Today, we have Dyson, Revlon, and dozens of other heated brushes that do exactly what I envisioned. That moment stuck with me. Not because I didn’t move on—I did. I went on to become an entrepreneur, launching ventures that were ahead of their time. But something shifted that day. A quiet hesitation began to settle in. The kind that makes you ask yourself: Maybe I don’t know what I’m doing. Maybe I’m not good enough. Maybe different means wrong. Encouragement Is Emotional Wellness Encouragement shapes identity. It teaches us to believe in our capacity. In our voice. In our ideas. When I started my own business years later, I had an idea for home-cooked meals —long before Blue Apron or SHEF. And again, I believed in it. But the voice in the back of my mind still whispered: Will people think this is too weird? Too early? Too much? What if, back in that classroom, someone had said: You’re an idea person. You think in ways others don’t. That’s a strength. That kind of affirmation doesn’t just help with confidence. It changes the way you navigate the world. Teaching with That Memory in My Pocket Now, as an educator, I keep that memory with me—on purpose. This semester, I’m teaching a communication class that combines public speaking, writing, and structure. I offer detailed outlines, speech formats, and even five-part introductions and three-point body points—because structure, I’ve learned, helps build clarity. But this semester, one student came to me with something different. He wanted to deliver a five-minute speech on the history of America—as a performance. Dramatic, musical even. He wanted to use sound effects like boom! and theatrical delivery. Most surprisingly, he said he didn’t want to follow my outline. He wasn’t being difficult. He was just curious. “What if there are other ways to structure a speech?” he asked. And in that moment, I saw my younger self—the girl with the hair dryer-brush idea. Someone willing to push boundaries. To create instead of comply. So I said yes. I gave him the freedom to explore, with just enough guidance to keep his core message intact. And what he delivered was so fun. Not just because it was different—but because it was his. We Teach Who We Were I carry that memory with me—the one of being shut down. And I bring it into the classroom intentionally. Because now, I get to be the teacher who says yes. Who encourages difference. Who lets a student experiment, even if it doesn’t follow a perfect outline. This is the season to try. To fail safely. To create. That’s what school should be. And that’s what encouragement makes possible. Whether you’re a parent, mentor, coach, or boss—when someone comes to you with a spark, fan the flame. Don’t dismiss it because it doesn’t fit your format. Give them the space to build something of their own. When we tell someone their ideas are worth exploring, we are building more than their resume. We are building their resilience. Their ability to adapt. Their trust in themselves. All of which are fundamental to lifelong mental wellness. Full Circle Maybe that’s why I get emotional when I speak to my students about their strengths. Because in affirming them, I’m quietly healing something in me. Something that once wondered if it was okay to think differently. So when I say to a student, “You’d be amazing at this,” I don’t say it lightly. I say it from experience. We don’t always know which words will stick. But I’ve learned that believing in someone’s potential—especially when they can’t yet see it for themselves—is one of the most meaningful things we can do for another human being. The Edinburgh Castle Let's start with the basics. Is Scotland part of the UK? The United Kingdom (UK) is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. So, yes, Scotland is a UK-constituent country. The heart on this map is where Edinburgh is located in the UK. Do you need a visa to travel to Scotland? Any visa you have for the UK covers visiting Scotland too. If you don't need a visa to enter the UK, then the same rules extend to Scotland. How to get to Edinburgh: By air, with an international airport serving various destinations. By trains - Train service is great if you are traveling from another part of UK. The train station is conveniently located in the middle of all the action. Whats the best time to visit Edinburgh? June through August, when days are long! This season is especially ideal for art enthusiasts as it coincides with the renowned Edinburgh Fringe, a three-week extravaganza held in August. What is the local currency in Edinburgh? The local currency in Edinburgh is the British Pound (GBP). Credit cards are accepted. If you have a Visa or Mastercard, you should be good! AMEX is not accepted everywhere. If you are withdrawing cash, get it from a local Edinburgh bank / ATM. Is the city good for those with walking difficulties? Please wear flat, comfortable shoes as you will be walking a lot! There are a lot of up and down alleyways, too many steep stairs and cobblestone streets in Old Town where all the tourist attractions are! But New Town is easier and mostly flat. I personally prefer Old Town for its charm but if you like shopping, new and sparkling, and flat ground, New Town is the way to go. Old Town is certainly more touristy, castle and all. THINGS TO DO IN EDINBURGH To explore Edinburgh's stunning hills, to take in the breathtaking views, to explore the splendid mix of architecture, and to experience the city's vibrant culture, here are our top experiences that any visitor to this magical city should consider: Participate in a Ceilidh (pronounced "kay-lee") The word "ceilidh" itself means a social gathering or party in Gaelic. Ceilidhs are lively gatherings where people come together to dance, socialize, and enjoy traditional Scottish music. The atmosphere is friendly and inclusive, and no experience is required to join in as a dance caller guides you through the steps. This is a great way to experience the joy of traditional Scottish dancing! Live music makes it even more fun. A Ceilidh social event in Edinburgh is an experience you will remember! We went to the EDINBURGH CEILIDH CLUB WITH TEANNAICH . All the dances were taught by the band so we could participate! The event was at 7:30 pm and it cost us £13.00 per person. Well worth it! Also, usually there is no food at these places, just drinks that you can buy at the bar. Explore Edinburgh Castle Entrance to the Edinburgh Castle Perched on top of Castle Rock, Edinburgh Castle is an iconic landmark and a must-visit attraction. Step through its ancient gates to unlock the secrets of Scottish royalty, military prowess, and the Crown Jewels. Immerse yourself in the grandeur of the Great Hall while taking in splendid city views! Witness the One O'clock Gun salute - Fired every day except Sundays! The first gun was fired in 1861 to provide an audible time signal for ships in the Port of Leith. You can rent a reasonably-priced audio guide at the entrance of the castle if you want. The lines to see the Crown Jewels can be long. There are also gift shops and two cafes inside - the Redcoat Cafe and The Tea Rooms. In other words, plan to spend a good amount of time at the castle! IMPORTANT TIP The Edinburgh Castle is a must-do attraction but tickets do sell out quickly. So buy in advance, way in advance! Each summer, the castle's esplanade is used as a unique concert venue. Accessible tickets are available. Find more details on their FaceBook page . When we were visiting, Rob Steward performed to a full house. It was pretty cool! Take a hop-on, hop-off bus Sometimes, the best way to see the city in a short time is to take a city bus that takes you around the top attractions. Hop on Hop Off Bus in Edinburgh We chose to buy a one day, 24 hour ticket on the City Sightseeing Bus to see some of the attractions we had missed in the first two days of our visit. It cost us under $25 per person. There were a few definite advantages: Discounts at gift shops and cafes Discounts in admission tickets at some attractions and tours Free Wi-Fi on the hop-on, hop-off buses One secret tip based on our experience: We didn't have tickets to the Edinburgh Castle and we checked a few times online - they were all sold out for two days - which meant we would be leaving Edinburgh without seeing the castle. Disappointed, we chose to see other attractions by buying city sightseeing bus tickets. Once we sat in the bus, the bus driver made an announcement: He had fast-track tickets to the castle. Whaaatttt? So there were tickets available, just not sold by the castle. Lucky us. So, now we know. Tour operators may have access to tickets that traveling tourists may not. Keep this in mind, peeps. Climb Arthur's Seat Embark on a hike up Arthur's Seat, an ancient volcano and one of the city's seven hills. Enjoy breathtaking views of Edinburgh and its surroundings from the summit. View from Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh Climbing up should take you 1 hour and 35 minutes. It is steep, slippery and rocky in places and you need good hiking shoes. Early morning is a good time to go. If you have less time, you could start at Dunsapie Lock on the south eastern side of the park - from here the route is shorter but it is still steep. As you stroll along the historic Royal Mile, you will find it to be a bustling street connecting Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Take the time to explore the quaint shops, vibrant pubs, and soak in the medieval atmosphere. Don't be afraid to take a few detours if you see or hear something interesting just off the main street. On your walk, check out the following things: St. Giles Cathedral This is a magnificent architectural masterpiece with its stunning Gothic design and intricate stained glass windows. It holds historical significance as the place where John Knox, the prominent Scottish Reformer, preached during the 16th century, leaving a lasting impact on the religious and cultural landscape of Scotland. A Deacon Brodie's cafe As a respected cabinetmaker by day and a cunning burglar by night, Brodie's double life became the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's famous novel "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." Today, Brodie's cafes can be found throughout Edinburgh! Admire Edinburgh architecture Edinburgh boasts a remarkable blend of Gothic, Georgian, and Victorian architecture. The stone buildings, narrow closes (alleyways), cobblestone streets, spires and turrets will transport you to a bygone era! Enjoy street music in Edinburgh You can often hear street musicians playing tunes on the Royal Mile! There are also live music bars in this area where musicians play different genres of music including traditional Scottish songs. Bars tend to get crowded but folks go in for that intimate experience. Greyfriars Bobby statue Find the statue of this dog just in front of the entrance to the Greyfriars Kirk. The story of Greyfriars Kirk and the Greyfriars Bobby statue in Edinburgh has captured the hearts of visitors worldwide, making it a cherished tourist attraction. The tale of the loyal Skye Terrier, Bobby, who faithfully guarded his master's grave for 14 years, symbolizes loyalty and devotion. The statue, erected in Bobby's honor, stands as a poignant reminder of this touching story and draws tourists who are captivated by the enduring bond between man and dog. Camera Obscura & the World of Illusions Personally, we think this attraction is most suited for young adults but if you are young-at-heart, you would love it too! Five floors with over 100 illusions. It should take you two hours to complete and it is highly recommended to book this experience in advance. Experience highlights include a fantastic view of the city, and projection displays after sunset! This attraction is quite close to the Edinburgh Castle and the Scotch Whiskey experience so you can plan your day accordingly. Palace of Holyroodhouse Step into the historic Palace of Holyroodhouse, an awe-inspiring landmark! This palace stands at the end of the Edinburgh royal mile. If you plan to take a hop-on, hop-off bus service, they make a stop right at this iconic castle. Book your tickets in advance to save some money. After your visit, enjoy a lovely lunch at the cafe right outside! We found a lot of good vegetarian options at the cafe. Underground vaults and closes Was there an Underground City in Edinburgh? There are certainly myths around this idea! Step down into Edinburgh's hidden history to explore the Real Mary King's Close . Unlock the secrets of a 17th century street and Edinburgh's dark past that has been preserved. From legends to the deadly plague epidemic, there are a myriad stories waiting to be told! Find this place on the Royal Mile opposite the St. Giles Cathedral, and is open 7 days a week. You can book online, tours are frequent. This experience involves uneven surfaces, inclines, steps and low light. National Museum of Scotland There is a lot to uncover at this museum, so you need at least 2-3 hours! Entry to the museum is free and it is open daily 10 AM - 5 PM. From the natural world to world culture, science, fashion, technology and Scottish history, this attraction has a lot of offer. Expect your visit to be family-friendly, food is available for purchase. Shops selling Tartan and Kilts Tartan, the distinctive patterned fabric, is an important symbol of Scottish heritage. In Edinburgh, you can find shops selling tartan clothing, kilts, scarves, and other traditional Scottish attire. A kilt is a Scottish garment for males. It resembles a wrap-around knee-length skirt, made of wool with pleats at the sides and the back. Most often, the pattern on the kilt is tartan. Explore Edinburgh New Town New Town is a well-organized and elegant part of the city. It is characterized by a grid-like layout, consisting of grand Georgian architecture and spacious streets. The main thoroughfare, Princes Street, runs along the southern edge, separating New Town from the lush Princes Street Gardens and providing stunning views of the Old Town and Edinburgh Castle. George St. has more boutiques! At the end of Princes Street, find Calton Hill which offers great hilltop views. It only takes 10 minutes to climb but it is steep. The monument on top on this hill is called Nelson Monument (which was temporarily closed during our visit) When in New Town, explore the following landmarks: Scottish National Gallery The National is right off Princes Street in the city center. You will find artwork from some of the greatest artists including Titian, Rembrandt and Constable and Scottish painters like Raeburn. The gallery is open daily 10 AM - 5 PM. There is also a nice cafe at the entrance which is open until 4 PM. Princes Street Gardens This is an urban garden that separates the Old Town from the New Town. It is pretty large and you see many locals there. One prominent landmark in the gardens is a cast-iron structure called the Ross Fountain. Right by the fountain, there is an area in the park where kids can play! Here, you will find a little pop-up store which sells baked goods and ice-cream. This is a good spot to take a break, rest and appreciate the green all around you. In the gardens, on the edge of busy Princes Street stands a striking monument to one of Scotland's best-loved writers, Sir Walter Scott . The capital city, also named Oaxaca (Oaxaca de Juárez), is a top destination for travelers, offering a blend of history, culture, and cuisine that is truly unique. Mexico City to Oaxaca Map Getting to Oaxaca Many travelers explore Mexico City before making their way to Oaxaca, spending a few days in each city. This was our approach as well—we spent five nights in Mexico City and then two nights in Oaxaca. For those considering how to get to Oaxaca, here are a few options: Option 1: Driving Driving from Mexico City to Oaxaca takes about 5-6 hours. You can easily rent a car from the airport or downtown Mexico City if you book in advance. Be prepared to pay for tolls, gas, and insurance along the way. Some travelers opt for an overnight stop in a smaller town, with Puebla being a popular choice for its charming atmosphere and historic sites. Option 2: Bus Taking a bus is likely the most budget-friendly way to travel between Mexico City and Oaxaca. Buses depart from the Terminal de Autobuses de Oriente (TAPO) in Mexico City and arrive at the Central de Autobuses de Oaxaca in the city center. For added comfort, private transfer options are also available. Option 3: Flying Flying is the quickest way to reach Oaxaca, with the airport codes being OAX (IATA) and MMOX (ICAO). Currently, LAX (Los Angeles, CA) is the only U.S. airport offering direct flights to Oaxaca. We chose to fly from Mexico City, as our schedule only allowed for two days in Oaxaca. The flight was brief, but be aware that the OAX airport is small, with limited flights that can sometimes be canceled. There is a lounge, though it's modest. We encountered some tense moments on our return trip due to a delayed flight, so it's wise to plan accordingly if you have connecting flights. Once you land in Oaxaca, you'll need to arrange transportation to your hotel. Keep in mind that there's no Uber available. See our reel - We were surprised to see men dancing too....so that was special :) OY -Look out for the Mojiganga! These larger-than-life puppets are more than just entertainment—they are a significant part of Mexican culture and history. Often seen during weddings or festivals, these giant paper-mâché figures are usually accompanied by musicians and dancers. Take a Cooking Class + Visit the Market A typical cooking class in Oaxaca includes a visit to a local farmer's market, followed by a hands-on session where you’ll prepare and enjoy dishes like mole, salsa, and tortillas, paired with mezcal. Explore the Food and Drinks Scene Oaxaca is a paradise for food lovers, including vegetarians. Dive into the local cuisine beyond just salsa and guacamole, and discover authentic dishes and drinks. While most restaurants offer seven varieties of mole, not all are vegetarian—so be sure to ask. And if you drink alcohol, a shot of mezcal is a must! Two restaurants I highly recommend, both with vegetarian options, are: Tierra del Sol Cocina Mixteca : This rooftop restaurant offers fresh salsa made at your table, a variety of moles (try the Mole Blanco with oyster mushrooms and tortilla!), and unique dishes like Ensalada, a salad with herbs and greens, and the Tostada salad sans sausage. Our week-long adventure through this mountainous gem revealed its winter charm, from the snowy peaks of Taos to the sun-drenched sands of Las Cruces. This detailed account of our journey is designed to help you plan your own unforgettable visit. Fly into Albuquerque and Rent a Car To make the most of your week in New Mexico, start by flying into Albuquerque and renting a car. Here are the four key areas you should explore: Taos Santa Fe Albuquerque Las Cruces Taos: A Winter Wonderland Taos is renowned for its ski slopes and quaint mountain town vibe. We visited in February, when most shops closed early (5 PM) and restaurants opened primarily for dinner. My advice: enjoy the slopes by day and dine early in town. Where to Stay: We stayed at the Historic Taos Inn , a charming, pueblo-style hotel. While it felt a bit pricey during the winter season, its location near Taos Plaza and the Taos Art Museum made it convenient. Where to Eat: The food scene in Taos offers limited vegetarian options. Love Apple, a top choice for vegetarians, was unfortunately closed during our visit. We frequented Cid's Health Food Market and World Cafe for breakfast. Doc Martin's at the Taos Inn and Gutiz stood out for their excellent coffee and breakfast options. Activities in Taos: Rio Grande Gorge Bridge: A breathtaking sight, especially when you walk across the bridge to fully appreciate the views. High Noon Ski Area: Even non-skiers will enjoy the ambiance and light, fluffy snow of this bustling ski village. The Scenic Route: Between Taos and Santa Fe Taking the High Road between Taos and Santa Fe is a must. Along the way, stop in the villages of Las Trampas and Chimayo to visit their historic churches. This is the village of Las Trampas - Here you will find the Church of San Jose de la Gracia, built in 1770-76, now designated as a national historic landmark. This below is Santuario de Chimayo, a very old and beautiful church. You will find it in the village of Chimayo Santa Fe: The Heart of Art and Culture Santa Fe, the most charming of all, is brimming with art and history. We stayed at El Rey Court , a short drive from downtown. What to See: Bandelier National Monument: Located about an hour from Santa Fe, this monument preserves the ancestral homes of the Pueblo people. You can see how little dwellings were carved into soft rock. Don't miss it, and get the guide that tells you more about each numbered spot - it definitely helped us appreciate the place a lot more. Canyon Road: This renowned street is a hub of artistic creativity, featuring numerous galleries and studios. Stroll along and admire a diverse array of artwork, from paintings to sculptures. My personal favorite was Prescott Gallery & Sculpture Garden, showcasing stunning pieces that capture the spirit of the Southwest. Downtown Santa Fe The downtown plaza is a vibrant area filled with shops, restaurants, and historic sites. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum One standout is the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, dedicated to the iconic artist known for her stunning depictions of New Mexico landscapes. If you're unfamiliar with her work, take the time to learn about her life and artistic journey. Reservations are strongly recommended. MeowWolf Museum An immersive art experience unlike any other. This interactive exhibit takes you through a surreal world of imaginative installations. Be prepared to explore hidden rooms and passageways, making it an unforgettable adventure for all ages. Where to Eat: Paper Dosa : A local favorite, this charming restaurant serves delicious and authentic South Indian cuisine. The dosas are particularly impressive, both in size and flavor. For breakfast, consider New York on Catron . And definitely order their hatch green chili bagel! Hatch Chili Bagel is a must try in Santa Fe! Secreto Lounge - Located at Hotel St. Francis, this elegant lounge offers expertly crafted cocktails and delectable appetizers in a sophisticated setting. Albuquerque: A City of Contrasts Albuquerque offers a mix of urban attractions and natural beauty. We stayed at the Double Tree in downtown. Nothing fancy, but did the job. What to See: Petroglyph National Monument: This fascinating site features over 4,000 ancient symbols and drawings carved into volcanic rock by Native Americans more than 500 years ago. A short walk will allow you to see many of these historic designs up close. Sandia Peak Tramway : A must-do experience offering breathtaking views from the top of Sandia Peak. The tramway takes you up to 11,000 feet, where you can enjoy panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. There is also a restaurant at the summit, but reservations are required. Remember to dress warmly as temperatures can be quite cool at the top. Downtown Albuquerque: This bustling area is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. We visited a charming tea shop and enjoyed browsing the unique stores. The sight of ristras (strings of dried red chilies) hanging from doors and ceilings adds to the distinctive New Mexican ambiance. Where to Eat: Sawmill Market : A luxurious food hall offering a wide range of cuisines. For vegetarian options, I recommend Flora Taco, churros at Churro Y Corn, Asian dishes at Kulantro, and pasta at Tulipani Pasta. For dessert, Neko Neko serves unique Asian-inspired ice creams. Pair your meal with a refreshing beer from Paxton's. Vinaigrette ! We tried this New Mexico-based farm-to-table restaurant in Austin actually and fell in love with it so we just had to eat there on our visit. Their salads are so fresh. Marble Brewery : This lively spot offers excellent craft beers and often hosts the Indian food truck Tikka Spice , which serves delicious dishes that pair perfectly with the brews. Frontier : A long-standing institution near the University of New Mexico, known for its hearty New Mexican breakfast. The vegetarian tortilla soup is tasty but quite spicy. And plan to walk around the University of New Mexico campus across from the restaurant - if you can. We loved the sculptures on campus and we loved posing by them :) Las Cruces and White Sands Monument: Desert Beauty Located at the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert, Las Cruces serves as a gateway to one of New Mexico's most striking natural wonders: the White Sands National Monument. This area is not only a popular retirement destination due to its warm climate but also a haven for those seeking the serenity of vast, undulating dunes. This accommodation offered spacious rooms with kitchenettes, perfect for extended stays. Where to Eat: Salud: Known for its vibrant atmosphere and delicious local cuisine. Lescombes: A must-visit for wine enthusiasts. Make sure to book a table in advance, as it’s a popular spot for dinner. It’s worth every penny for the unique beauty that awaits. Bring Supplies: Carry plenty of water and snacks, especially if you have dietary restrictions, as facilities are limited. Dress Appropriately: The weather can be unpredictable. Pack jackets to protect against the wind, which can be brisk even when the sun is shining. Skip the Plastic Slides: While sliding down the dunes might sound fun, it can be exhausting due to the height of the dunes. Instead, enjoy a leisurely walk and take in the breathtaking scenery. Watch the Documentary: Start your visit at the visitor center and watch the informative documentary about the monument. It provides valuable insights into the formation and significance of the dunes. Nearby Attractions: While the immediate vicinity of White Sands doesn’t offer much in terms of dining, we found a few OK-ish spots: Carino’s Italian Grill: Located about 30 minutes away, it offers hearty meals with a New Mexican twist. Their pizza with hatch chilies is a highlight. Pistachioland: Famous for its variety of flavored pistachios and pistachio ice cream. Although the ice cream felt store-bought, the unique flavors of the pistachios were worth the stop.

There are so many incredible things to do in Miami, but time is always limited. We've just returned from our Miami trip, and while the memories are fresh, it's time to document our experiences. If you're wondering what to prioritize, look no further. North and Mid Beach offer a more relaxed atmosphere, with North Beach being more residential. A must-visit spot is Lincoln Road Mall in Mid Beach, where you can marvel at the 1111 Lincoln Road parking lot, a masterpiece designed by renowned architects. For a touch of luxury, enjoy a drink at the Fountainbleu. South Beach is the epitome of Miami's glamour, especially at night. If you're with family, one evening in South Beach is recommended. Start your South Beach adventure with dinner at Time Out Market (1601 Drexel Ave, Miami Beach), a curated selection of Miami Beach's finest chefs offering eclectic food, drinks, and desserts suitable for both meat-eaters and vegetarians. After dinner, take a stroll down Ocean Drive, South Beach's iconic street, where you can enjoy live music, dancing, and entertainment while sipping on drinks. Park your car in one of the garages on Collins. As you stroll down Ocean Drive, you will see beautifully lit colorful buildings, many with restaurants on the lower levels and hosts inviting you to dine with them. Each one has their menus outside so you can take a look at them before making your decision. I would recommend just drinks here - and that can be fun too with live music, dances and entertainment. We decided to enjoy the performance of this Flamenco dancer and the talented man on the guitar. As the night progressed, the dancer changed out of her Spanish outfit and performed the Raq Sharqi - which is an Egyptian form of belly dancing. We had a great time - and the drinks were strong! Ahem. Financial District and Brickell City Center Brickell might seem mundane during the day, but at night, it comes alive. Our recommendation is to visit Brickell at night. For a child-free evening, head to SUGAR, a trendy spot located 40 floors up, offering panoramic views and delightful cocktails. Reservations are suggested. Remember that kids are not allowed in this lounge in the night so go at 4 PM. If you are with family, go to CH'I. Find it at 'The Shops' mall. It is a kid-friendly restaurant option, offering intriguing Asian-Latino fusion food, cool cocktails, DJ and a lively ambiance. Of course, if you rather just walk the streets, this cute gelato place - Freddo is for you! Order the Dulce Le Leche and be immediately transported to ice-cream heaven! Miami Design District I would describe this area as Beverly Hills' Rodeo Drive or NYC's 5th Ave. But there is a twist. A blend of luxury and art, this area boasts spectacular architecture, public art installations, and design-centric interiors in its luxury stores That's what sets this district apart. As you explore the district, you'll encounter chess-inspired installations by the late Virgil Abloh and other fascinating sights. As you walk those streets, you will undoubtedly stop to admire the exterior of each of these luxury and boutique brands. You will peep in to see the interiors and the displays. The Louis Vuitton interior is mind-blowing, and ever-changing. The Fendi interior is eye-boggling and will make you dizzy. The public art is really cool too. The knife-for-a-door knob is clever. A line of chairs is hanging from the roof of Dior - See it to believe it! A public swing system that looks and moves like a design masterpiece. You gotta give it them - The Miami Design District is brilliant! Even the exterior of the parking lot is something you may have never seen before! It looks like a fancy casino entrance! This garage facade was called the 'Urban Jam' and it used 45 gravity-defining car bodies to show the rebirth of urban life where old structures have been repurposed into urban design. Urban Jam Garage Facade Finally and most importantly - MIA Market ! Don't miss the MIA Market, a curated food court on 39th St., offering a variety of vegetarian options. While you wait for your food, relax on the designer swings outside. Little Havana Ooh, roosters. You can't miss them. If you see these roosters, STOP THE CAR!! You are in Little Havana! Of course, roosters aren't the only things to check out here. This vibrant neighborhood offers a plethora of experiences, including Domino Park, Calle Ocho (Main Street), La Colada (a Cuban coffee shop), Los Pinareños Fruteria (a fruit stand frozen in time), traditional cigar shops, Cuban memorials, and live Cuban music at Ball and Chain. Don't forget to visit Azucar, a Cuban ice-cream place, and enjoy unique flavors like guava and sweet plantain. Lets do a deeper dive: Domino Park: A small enclosed space with a roof and a bunch of tables. This is where you will find older Cubans sitting at tables, playing a game of dominos Domino Park, Little Havana, Miami Walk on the Main Street - Calle Ocho : An 'Instagrammable -Stop and Snap' moment! A Cuban coffee shop called La Colada : We ordered the Tres Leche - It was divine and pretty darn authentic The fruit stand ( Los Pinareños Fruteria ): It's frozen in time, definitely get the coconut water (best way to avoid the buzzing flies around juice machine.) But if you are really into sugarcane juice, this is your spot! A cigar shop that is rolling and packaging cigars (there are a few, peek into windows) A shop selling traditional 4-pocket men's shirts called Guayaberas and Cuban hats - I recommend D Asis The Cuban Memorial Boulevard with a flame memorial and statues A Cuban Ice-cream place called Azucar and try unique flavors like guava and sweet plantain Live Cuban music and drinks at Ball and Chain Rooster Alley and the Little Havana Wall which represents the community, its struggles and successes and its communist history, and near it - the Cuban version of the Walk of Fame! Wynwood Walls Wynwood Walls, located at 266 NW 26th St, Miami, FL 33127, is not just an outdoor museum; it's a powerful commentary on global issues. On first look, Wynwood Walls appear to be unique installations and colorful murals. Look closer and you realize that the murals reflect life and are a commentary on world issues - environment problems, garbage, politics, race divide, gender strength, immigration, and the celebration of culture. It is an outdoor museum (tickets to enter and everything!) and one that you must see. If you are traveling with children, these murals may help start a conversation on important things. DOWNTOWN MIAMI The Bayside Market and Park are the main attractions of downtown Miami. Right across from the Bayside Market is the FTX Arena, home of the Miami Heat NBA Basketball Team. Right there is also the Freedom Tower, a historic building that is now a museum but once housed the newspaper The Miami News. When you visit Miami, the Thriller Speed Boat at the Bayside Market is a must-do. Kids are welcome aboard. Get ready to be re-charged as the wind blows on your face and in your hair. It will make you SO HAPPY! Here is how you do it - Book the tour boat tickets in advance: https://www.thrillermiami.com Then drive to Bayside Market. This is actually a huge area with restaurants, shops and cafes and it is right by the marina where all the tour boats are docked. They also have a parking lot. You can spend a few hours here if you want. There are several companies that offer water boat tours - They will show you celebrity homes as they cruise along. I recommend the Thriller Speed Boat because you also get the same tour along with the thrill of a speed boat - so its more fun! Show up 15 minutes before and stand in line.. Sit toward the front or middle of the boat. If you are by the end, you will get wet. Our thriller boat guide was pretty sweet too and funny! We got to Bayside 30 minutes before our ride. We picked up some Cafe con Leche and nibbled on a traditional cheesy bake while waiting in line for our turn to board the boat. No doubt folks, this speedboat experience was one we will remember for a long time. Highly recommend! Hope you manage to hit these six must-do, must-see Miami spots. There is a shop in the park, a couple of restaurants open for late lunch, a tea house and a pretty waterfall. You can easily spend 2-3 hours in this area. Day 2: Nathan Road - Tsim Sha Tsui Conclude your Hong Kong adventure with a leisurely stroll along Nathan Road, Kowloon's bustling thoroughfare lined with shops, eateries, and cultural attractions. As new parents, prioritizing self-care is essential, and a thoughtfully planned holiday can provide the perfect opportunity to rejuvenate. When our daughter was 8 months old—she's now 15—we stayed at the Hollywood Mirage in Los Cristianos, Tenerife . Reflecting on our experience, we've also researched current offerings to provide you with up-to-date insights for your family getaway. Photo of Hollywood Mirage in Tenerife, Canary Islands Accommodation and Amenities The Hollywood Mirage is situated in the heart of Urbanización Oasis del Sur, adjacent to the popular tourist spot of Los Cristianos in the south of Tenerife - Canary Islands . The resort offers spacious apartments equipped with kitchenettes, allowing for the preparation of baby-friendly meals at any time. Our apartment featured a lovely balcony, providing a serene space to unwind during our child's naps. The kitchen was well-appointed, though it's advisable to purchase essentials like salt and pepper, as these were not provided. While the appliances were adequate, there was no dishwasher available. The resort's staff were extremely friendly and helpful, ensuring a comfortable stay. The maid service was fantastic, with daily cleaning that kept our space immaculate. The on-site grocery store was convenient for basic necessities, and for a broader selection, a SPAR supermarket was a 10-minute walk away. However, the uphill return can be challenging with groceries in tow, and taxis were not always readily available, though calling for one is an option. Family-Friendly Services A family photo with our 8 month old. So tiny! The Hollywood Mirage caters well to families with young children. Upon request, we received a baby cot, high chair, bottle warmer, and diaper disposal bags, which significantly eased our stay. The resort features two lovely pools and at least one restaurant within the complex. The restaurant offered a great dining experience, and for a fee of 15 Euros per week (which may have increased since our visit), guests could access the gym, sauna, squash courts, and receive pool towels—a worthwhile package for those interested in these amenities. A road in Tenerife, Canary Islands During our stay, the resort did not offer a shuttle service to and from Tenerife airport, resulting in a 25 Euro taxi fare to reach the hotel. However, the resort provided a convenient shuttle service to the beach, with a frequency that suited our schedule. The approximately 10-minute ride was pleasant and free from traffic issues at the time. Dining and Local Cuisine Alcoholic beverages at the beach were affordably priced, and the food was decent. However, we advise caution when selecting restaurants that claim to be "the best" in various cuisines, as our experience with a self-proclaimed top Mexican restaurant was disappointing. Excursions and Activities A highlight was the unique black sand on the beach, offering a distinctive experience. While the resort's front desk staff were helpful, we recommend conducting personal research before embarking on excursions with an infant. For instance, a trip to Mount Teide proved challenging due to the high elevation, which our baby struggled with. Additionally, a whale and dolphin watching boat ride was marred by unexpectedly choppy waves, despite assurances to the contrary. These experiences taught us the importance of carefully considering the suitability of activities for young children. Additional Considerations The resort's laundry facilities were on the pricier side, with a single wash and dry cycle costing 8 Euros. As light packers, we found this expense notable. On a positive note, local wines were inexpensive—just be mindful to enjoy them in moderation! Overall, our stay at the Hollywood Mirage provided a much-needed retreat, allowing us to recharge and enjoy quality family time. - A day at the Underwood Family Farms
Just 1.5 hours from Manhattan Beach is a farm that is just a delight for adults and children alike. A couple years ago, we made our way to the Underwood Family Farms for their annual Easter Springtime Festival . Where: Moorpark Location 3370 Sunset Valley Road Moorpark, CA 93021 They had so many awesome things going on. Lots of farm animals and Easter eggs everywhere, opportunities to pick your own vegetables, farm rides, and basket decoration. Check out our photos... !
- An afternoon at Doffo in Temecula
Napa Valley is pretty far from Los Angeles. If you like wine and want to spend your day looking at vineyards, consider Temecula. The town of Temecula is couple hours drive from Los Angeles. It is a tourist-friendly city known for its golf courses, hot air balloon rides, Old Town charm and award-winning wineries. You could stay in Temecula for a couple nights or you could do a day trip. Both are viable options. If you want to stay in Temecula for a couple nights, there are several options. South Coast Winery Resort & Spa is set on 63 acres of vineyards and is one of the most popular hotels to stay. Carter Estate Winery and Resort has a Mediterranean-feel and has 40+ bunglows. Temecula Creek Inn is on a golf course and has nice size rooms. Ponte Vineyard Inn is newer, luxurious, boutique-like and more expensive. The Inn at Europa overlooks Europa Village and is a bed & breakfast. Wilson Creek Manor has a very popular winery and restaurant and the accommodations are welcoming. The Inn at Churon Winery is on a hilltop and has spectacular views. On our last day trip, we made our way down to Temecula to check out a micro-boutique, family-owned winery called Doffo , known for its reds. The winery was founded in 1997 by Marcelo Doffo. It is a small batch, limited production winery with wines made in the old world style. The winery houses a small motorcycle museum, Motto Doffo. Bikers will definitely feel at home here - the owner is a motorcycle enthusiast and so are his son and daughter-in-law. If you are member, you can even stay at this winery. The service was lovely and the atmosphere, relaxing. They had 4-5 different flight options and also a menu by the glass. We requested a $45 2017 flight to share. We started our tasting journey with the 2017 Salute, which I thought was definitely dry. Then we moved on to the Malbec. Most bottles of Malbecs in general come from Argentina but this highly rated 2017 Malbec that you see in the photo above is from Temecula - with grapes grown and the wine bottled and packaged at Doffo. The Malbec tasted quite different from the Malbecs we were used to, but it was okay. The 2017 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was Puneet's favorite but their award-winning 2017 Zinfandel was mine. I know I will be back for the Zin :) We had a lovely evening at Duffo. My recommendation is - Come for the Zin. Stay for the sunset.

In my opinion, the most prominent news media here seems to be the Austin American Statesman . I also personally like the Community Impact and the Austin Chronicle news media because they seems more personal and local. The Austin Monthly is a good place to learn about the best of Austin. From tech to culture to food, they cover it all. NEIGHBORHOODS Looking for cool touristy things to do? There are several happening neighborhoods in Austin. Downtown has live music and cool boutiques. Rainey Street is lively and best for evening drinks. Warehouse District has the best LGBTQ bars. South Congress Avenue in South Austin is family-friendly and THE spot to buy boots (Allen Boots!). Mueller in East Austin is a hip planned community. For high-end shopping and fantastic restaurants, visit The Domain. Find UT-Austin in Central Austin. For scenic hills and lake-views, visit West Austin neighborhoods like Tarrytown and Westlake. Looking to move here? Look up the distance to Frericksburg and you will get a quick idea. Start with this resource for wine tours, sight-seeing tours and listing of the most popular wineries. Click on winery listings , or check out 8 wineries in two days ! TEMPERATURE Austin summers are HOT, it can get to 100F. There are ways to cool off - Visit the Barton Springs public pool which is OMG huge and ensure you have air-conditioning if you are in an AirB&B. Also, the city is not equipped to handle major snow storms, but those are usually one-off events - so despite the recent events, do not be discouraged by that.
- The Hawaii Island: Maui
The truth is that you need a week at least for each Hawaii island, and probably more with Maui, Hawaii's second largest island. If you are visiting for a short time, I would recommend that you stay in a hotel with a little kitchen so you explore more and spend less. It is also a better option for vegetarians because veggie food options are slightly limited. That said, grocery stores carry pretty much anything you may need to cook simple, healthy meals. On our last visit to Maui, we stayed in an area called Kaanapali, close to Lahaina. We did venture out to other places across the island but we also spent decent periods in those areas. Based on my time there, here are things I recommend to see / do. Pineapple Farm There is more than one farm out there, some farms even sell pineapple ice cream! We went to Maui Pineapple Tour where we were driven around in a little bus around the Maui Gold Pineapple Fields, stopped to taste some pineapples and then also viewed the pineapple cleaning and packaging process. Pretty cool stuff! (Insider Tip: Right next to this farm is a glass blowing shop, check it out!) Organic Distillery We like our alcohol SO MUCH BETTER when it is organic, so we had to go to the Hawaii Sea Spirits farm - especially since we had seen their Ocean Vodka product at Whole Foods. They say its all about the story, and these folks have a good one. They use organic sugarcane (grown right here!) and deep ocean mineral water in their distillery. There was a nice show and tell, tasting and everyone had a good time. Haleakala Crater A rare and sacred landscape is really the best way to describe this place. It is quite windy up there at 10,000 ft over the Pacific Ocean and parts of this massive volcano crater looks like you are on Mars. You can book a tour in advance to see the sunrise or you could just make your way up there in the early afternoon (like we did) to experience this landscape. It is an unforgettable experience. Road to Hana While this is just a scenic drive, it is probably the best one you will ever do. If you are not a confident driver, you could join a tour but we were comfortable doing it on our own. Remember to keep your eyes on the road, though. There are many one-way bridges, some roads are narrow and pretty curvy. And we rented a jeep because that's the kind of car you need. Lush green covers, rainforest feel, waterfalls and lookouts. If you like nature, your soul will do a happy dance. There is a four-mile hike at the 7 sacred pools, which is worthwhile, and the bamboo forests are amazing. The drive is long but you can choose to go a specific distance and then turn around. For eg. Turn around at Twin Falls or at the Ke'anae Peninsula or Wai'anapanapa Park. Play by ear - Just start early! Goat Dairy Farm and Cheese Tastings Would you like a make-up brush made of goat hair? Ha! Find it at the Surfing Goat Dairy. This spot can be a fun break from all the madness and it is perfect for those with little kids. For a casual tour to see the goats, just buy a ticket and walk around the farm. Taste some delicious cheese. If you want to milk the goats, that's another experience to consider. Note: If you are even slightly lactose intolerant, skip the cheese. It was too fresh for me, but Puneet liked it. For us, rather than sitting in a hotel room, this was just something fun to do. Besides, who doesn't like cute goats? The Plantation House at Kapalua Resort You may or may not know but my partner-in-crime, Puneet loves to golf. While we did not have the time to golf in this trip, we just had to check out the Kapalua Golf Course - one of the most majestic courses in the world, consistently ranked as #1 in Hawaii and one champions talk about! So, we made our way down to The Plantation House at the Kapalua Resort which has a unique vantage point on the golf course and of course panoramic ocean views. Regrettably, vegetarian food on the menu is an afterthought. I mean, you will find something, but nothing spectacular. Quick drink and the most beautiful views - Yes! Okay, yay - Check. The Great Buddha at Lahaina I am generally a fan of Buddha and of Buddhism, so I love visiting Buddhist temples. They give me peace. The Giant Buddha statue at Lahaina Jodo Mission is 12-ft high. It was made in 1968 in Japan and then erected in Lahaina that year to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the first Japanese settlement in Hawaii. When you walk around in the premises, look for the huge temple bell which is still rung today. The Banyan Tree They claim that this massive Banyan Tree on Front Street in Lahaina is one of the largest in the United States. This beautiful tree is 150 years old and was imported from India. It now has several (16) trunks and it looks like a little forest of its own! It's fascinating and a must-see. Get a book and read under its shade on those benches. Water Fun I live in a beach town so this water stuff is what we take for granted - Right? Wrong. The Pacific Ocean in Los Angeles is so cold, always cold. Hawaii is a different story. The water is warm and wonderful and you don't need wet suits! And then, there is the resort pool. We have a water baby so she would literally need to be bribed to get out of water! Anya was the happiest doing water activities. The Hawaiian Luau When in Hawaii, find time to go to a Luau - a celebration of food, dance, culture and music. Of course, food is meat-heavy and not for us but the atmosphere is lively and the performances are great. The Hulu dancers that we had the honor of watching were uber talented! At one point, we saw a person performing with fire, which was scary but cool. Also, at the end of the performance, the dancers invited all of us on the stage to dance - this was so much fun! In the videos, you will see that the dancers kept going even when it started to drizzle. Honestly, it added to the ambience and the experience and the rainbow made an appearance so it was all good.
