Catamaran Resort San Diego Review: A Tropical Getaway on Mission Bay
With lush gardens, waterfront dining, resident parrots and plenty of ways to enjoy Mission Bay, the Catamaran Resort makes a compelling case for staying put.
San Diego has plenty of waterfront hotels, but how many make you reconsider your plans to explore the city? We booked the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa for a family birthday weekend, hoping for a change of scenery without a packed itinerary. Our daughter had college applications to work on, we wanted some downtime, and we even brought our dog, Haiku, who isn't always the most cooperative travel companion.
By the following day, we'd canceled our birthday dinner reservation at Catania in La Jolla and booked Oceana Coastal Kitchen at the resort instead. Between the tropical gardens, waterfront paths, restaurants and activities, we were enjoying ourselves too much to leave.
A Tropical Resort in the Heart of San Diego
Located on Mission Bay in Pacific Beach, the Catamaran Resort has been welcoming guests since 1958, when the Evans family opened an 82-room Polynesian-inspired inn. Today, the property has approximately 310 rooms, but the tropical atmosphere remains its defining feature.
The landscaping is particularly impressive. Towering palms, bamboo, orchids and dense greenery surround koi ponds, waterfalls and shaded walking paths. Ducks wander through the gardens, and six resident parrots add plenty of personality. We even stopped to investigate an unusual fuzzy fruit growing among the tropical plants, although we decided to leave the tasting to someone more adventurous.

The grounds feel remarkably peaceful despite the resort's lively atmosphere. There are plenty of places to sit with a coffee or book, and the shaded pathways make exploring comfortable throughout the day.
With Mission Bay directly outside and the Pacific Ocean a short walk away, the Catamaran offers two very different waterfront experiences without requiring a car.
Our Bayfront Suite: Which Room Should You Book?
We booked through American Express and received a room upgrade, along with breakfast benefits and a resort credit. The hotel was attentive even before we arrived, sending several emails offering assistance and responding promptly to our questions.
At check-in, we could choose between an elevated balcony with bay views or a ground-floor suite opening directly toward the waterfront. With Haiku along, we chose the patio suite, which made taking her outside considerably easier.
Our accommodation had a separate king bedroom, living area with a pullout sofa, dining table, refrigerator and a beautifully updated bathroom. The beds were comfortable, housekeeping was excellent, and opening the curtains each morning to see Mission Bay was a lovely way to begin the day.
Our recommendation: Choose a beachfront suite if you want immediate access to the bayfront paths, particularly when traveling with a dog. The tower rooms are another appealing option for guests who prefer elevated views and a private balcony. Keep in mind that ground-floor patios aren't necessarily enclosed.
Things to Do at the Catamaran Resort
One of the property's biggest advantages is how easily you can enjoy Mission Bay without planning an excursion.
We started one morning with a 5K run along the waterfront, passing running groups, cyclists, dog walkers, paddle boarders and a rowing team practicing on the water. The bayfront paths extend well beyond the resort, making them ideal for walking, running or exploring by bicycle.
Guests can also enjoy paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing, bike rentals and other watersports. We didn't manage to try everything on this visit, but renting beach cruisers and getting out on the water are already on our list for next time.

Back at the resort, there's a swimming pool, fitness facilities, a spa and tropical gardens with plenty of seating areas. It's a convenient setup for families or groups whose members don't necessarily want to spend the day doing the same thing.
Meet Chadwick and the Resident Parrots
The Catamaran is home to six parrots, including macaws, cockatoos and an Amazon parrot. Their presence is part of the resort's character; there's even a macaw on the room key.
Our favorite was Chadwick, an Eleonora cockatoo who greeted me when I said hello, then began dropping things onto the floor, apparently delighted to have an audience. The resort describes him as an escape artist who has occasionally wandered toward Moray's looking for peanuts and company.
He's quite the character, and the birds are worth visiting while exploring the gardens.
Dining at Oceana Coastal Kitchen
We enjoyed Oceana Coastal Kitchen enough to return for several meals, including my husband's birthday dinner. Overlooking Mission Bay, the restaurant has an airy indoor-outdoor setting that makes the most of San Diego's beautiful weather.
For lunch, we enjoyed California-style dishes featuring quinoa, avocado and fresh vegetables. Dinner offered a broader coastal menu, including sushi, seafood, poke bowls and shared starters, with good choices for vegetarians.
Our table ordered artisan sourdough with two flavored butters, carrot-ginger soup, vegetarian sushi, broccoli and a chef's sushi sampler for the seafood eaters. The presentation was attractive, the drinks were excellent, and we enjoyed everything we tried.

We'd booked an outdoor table for 7:45 p.m., and with the tiki lights glowing and Mission Bay in the background, it was a lovely setting for a birthday celebration. The atmosphere was relaxed but special, and the service was consistently friendly.
Breakfast was equally enjoyable, particularly with the waterfront views. Our American Express reservation included a breakfast allowance, and the menu offered several vegetarian choices, including a very good avocado toast. For a quicker coffee or snack, the resort also has Lava Java.
Dining tip: Reserve an outdoor table at Oceana in advance if you're celebrating something or hoping to enjoy the bay views at dinner.
Evenings at the Catamaran Are Especially Lovely
The resort has a different atmosphere after sunset, and this was one of our favorite parts of the stay.
Tiki torches illuminate the pathways, lights reflect across Mission Bay, and guests gather around outdoor fires or settle into chairs overlooking the water. We saw families making s'mores, couples enjoying drinks and people taking leisurely evening walks with their dogs. Moray's tropical lounge has outdoor seating and fire pits, making it another inviting spot to spend the evening.
The Catamaran is very family-friendly, with plenty of children enjoying the pool and grounds during the day. Couples looking for a quieter experience may especially enjoy the later evening hours, when the waterfront becomes more peaceful.
Is the Catamaran Resort Dog-Friendly?
Haiku enjoying her San Diego getaway. Haiku enjoying her San Diego getaway.
Yes, and bringing Haiku turned out to be one of our better decisions.
The staff welcomed her warmly, provided a dog bowl and made traveling with her easy. Dogs are required to remain leashed around the property, and there are plenty of convenient waterfront paths for walks.
We could also bring Haiku to Oceana's outdoor dining area, where she mostly settled quietly beside our table. There is an additional pet cleaning fee, so check the resort's current policy before booking.
Is the Catamaran Resort Worth Staying At?
For travelers who enjoy tropical surroundings, waterfront activities and a relaxed resort atmosphere, we'd certainly recommend it.
The Catamaran is particularly well suited to families, couples looking for a casual getaway, dog owners and Los Angeles residents planning a short San Diego staycation. It's also a convenient choice when traveling with people who want different things from their vacation.
We appreciated the warm service throughout our stay, from the pre-arrival communication to the attentive restaurant staff and daily housekeeping. On-site parking and EV charging were helpful, too; we were able to charge our Tesla using an adapter. Parking, resort and pet fees should be factored into your booking.
What made the weekend memorable was the ease of it all. We could run along the bay, enjoy good meals, take Haiku for walks, relax among the gardens and celebrate a birthday without feeling the need to go anywhere else.
We'd happily return, perhaps next time with a little more time for the water sports and bike rides we didn't manage to fit in.
