Signed up for some big races this year, so training starts here. Out of the car, onto the track—easier on my knees. Warm-up first, then the run.

First 5K of the year. For reference, that’s about 3.18 miles. The last mile was hard.

I’m spending more time on recovery because my body takes longer to bounce back now. Cold water after—55°F, which is not relaxing but very effective. Then a Thai massage with Swedish strokes and long assisted stretches. The kind of “hurts-good” that reminds you where you’re tight.

Health right now is about staying mobile, building strength, and not checking out as my body changes.

Taking a couple of days off, then back for round two later this week.

This Seattle trip covered more ground than expected, mostly because the city makes it easy to move between very different areas in a short amount of time. We started with views of the Space Needle at sunset, then the next day, spent a good chunk of time at the University of Washington. The campus is worth walking, especially beyond the obvious paths — we toured the dorm areas and ended up downstairs in shared student spaces with bowling lanes, chess boards, and pool tables. It felt very lived-in and gave a real sense of student life, not just the postcard version of the university.

We also walked around Magnolia, which felt completely different from downtown — quieter, residential, scenic, and great for long neighborhood walks. From there, we headed toward Pike Place and the waterfront. We skipped going inside the original Starbucks because the lines were intense, but walking that area alone is its own experience. Pike Place was busy but fun to explore inside: seafood counters, farmers market stalls, and plenty of people watching, including street performers (yes, including people in full cat costumes playing music).

As we moved uphill, the Overlook Walk stood out — a newer pedestrian path where you can sit, look out over the water. Nearby, we passed the entrance to the Seattle Aquarium, the Gum Wall, and the Seattle Art Museum, all within easy walking distance. These photos follow that path: campus, neighborhoods, market, waterfront, and views — a realistic way to experience Seattle without trying to do everything at once.
