A day at the Underwood Family Farms

Just 1.5 hours from Manhattan Beach is a farm that is just a delight for adults and children alike. A couple years ago, we made our way to the Underwood Family Farms for their annual Easter Springtime Festival.

Where: Moorpark Location 3370 Sunset Valley Road Moorpark, CA 93021

They had so many awesome things going on. Lots of farm animals and Easter eggs everywhere, opportunities to pick your own vegetables, farm rides, and basket decoration.

Why does wellness travel feel different? Here is my personal and cultural perspective. #wellness #wellnesstravel

A night walk in the forest is mostly a lesson in paying attention. We spent an hour looking for frogs — tiny ones, bright ones, the red-eyed tree frog everyone hopes to see — and watching leaf-cutter ants carry leaves bigger than their bodies.

Someone in our group spotted a fer-de-lance on the trail (one of the region’s dangerous snakes), and the guide moved it away before anyone got close. For me, the bigger challenge was cockroaches and crickets jumping around in the dark — I’m not great with insects — but I kept going.

You can probably spot wildlife in the daytime too, but some creatures are truly nocturnal, and there’s something bold and beautiful about walking with only a torch, listening for movement, and trusting your steps.

Between the La Fortuna Waterfall and the Arenal mountain hike, we stopped at Rancho Rainforest Restaurant for a traditional Costa Rican lunch — rice, beans, plantains, yuca, salad, and a cold Cas drink. Open air, rainforest all around, and bird calls from a region that holds over 500 species. A simple local meal in the middle of the day, and somehow the most grounding moment between two big adventures. #LaFortuna #CostaRicaTravel #wellnesstravel

Locals turning a river into a jungle circus act. I’m over here with my camera, fully impressed and absolutely not volunteering to try it. Wild, fearless, and somehow completely normal if you’ve grown up here.
