Some of the loveliest travel discoveries are entirely unplanned. On our way to Temecula, we stopped in San Juan Capistrano, a charming town in southern Orange County best known for its historic Spanish mission. We had no particular agenda beyond stretching our legs and exploring the neighborhood.

Little did we know that a short walk would lead us to one of the most delightful tea houses in Southern California.

The Tea House on Los Rios is tucked into San Juan Capistrano's historic Los Rios district, just a short walk from the train depot. Set in a restored cottage surrounded by gardens, it's a lovely destination for afternoon tea, weekend brunch, or a leisurely celebration with friends and family.

The Tea House on Los Rios is an English-style afternoon tea restaurant at 31731 Los Rios Street in San Juan Capistrano, California. Located in the historic Los Rios district near the train station, it offers traditional afternoon tea with loose-leaf teas, scones, tea sandwiches, and pastries in a charming cottage and garden setting. Afternoon tea experiences range from $46 to $84 per person on the published menu, and reservations are recommended.

Discovering the Historic Los Rios District

We parked near the San Juan Capistrano train station and wandered toward Los Rios Street, where old cottages have been transformed into boutiques, cafés, and restaurants. The neighborhood has the feeling of a tiny artisan village. Its historic buildings, gardens, and pedestrian-friendly setting invite you to slow down and explore. Just steps from the train depot, we spotted The Tea House on Los Rios. With its inviting verandah, garden tables, and old-fashioned charm, it was impossible to resist. The Tea House occupies a cottage dating to 1911, making it a particularly fitting destination in one of California's most historic neighborhoods.

Tea, Scones, and a Beautiful Garden Setting

The restaurant feels wonderfully English, with traditional tea service, pretty table settings, and plenty of greenery. Indoor seating is available, but the outdoor verandah and garden are especially appealing on a pleasant Southern California day.

We ordered hot tea for the adults and strawberry tea for our daughter. For something sweet, we chose a freshly baked scone served with raspberry compote, a chocolate ganache cake, and a fruit plate. Everything arrived beautifully presented, and the food tasted as delicious as it looked.

The service made the experience even more memorable. Our daughter wasn't particularly happy with her first selection, and our server graciously exchanged it for something else. It's a small gesture, but exactly the kind that leaves a lasting impression.

And then there were the wind chimes.

From a neighboring shop came the soft sound of chimes drifting through the garden. Between the tea, the cottage, and the gentle music of the breeze, the entire afternoon felt rather magical.
