Switzerland Named World's Best Wellness Destination for 2026
From mountain thermal baths to lakeside luxury retreats, Switzerland has plenty to offer travelers looking for a wellness escape.
Switzerland has been named World's Best Wellness Destination 2026 at the 12th annual World Spa Awards, announced in September.
The recognition, determined through public and spa-industry voting, celebrates a country where thermal bathing, Alpine landscapes and luxury wellness have long been part of the travel experience. Switzerland was also nominated in 2025, when Arizona received the award. This year, two Swiss properties earned additional honors: Bürgenstock Alpine Spa and Clinique La Prairie.
Here are five places to experience Switzerland's wellness culture.
Bürgenstock: An award-winning spa above Lake Lucerne
Perched above Lake Lucerne, Bürgenstock Alpine Spa won Switzerland's Best Hotel Spa for the fourth consecutive year. The resort's outdoor infinity pool overlooks the lake and surrounding mountains, while indoor pools, saunas and treatment facilities complete the experience. Getting there is part of the fun: visitors can travel by boat from Lucerne and ascend the mountain by funicular.
You don't necessarily need an overnight reservation. Selected day-spa packages are available. See Bürgenstock's spectacular setting in our video guide to five Swiss thermal spas and mountain hotels.
Vals: Thermal bathing meets remarkable architecture
In the mountain village of Vals, architect Peter Zumthor's 7132 Therme offers a distinctly different experience. Built from local quartzite, the baths feature pools of varying temperatures, stone chambers and carefully controlled natural light. The emphasis is on bathing and architecture rather than elaborate treatments.
The thermal complex welcomes day visitors with reservations. Book ahead, particularly for its Wednesday night-bathing sessions, which take place from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Leukerbad: Alpine thermal pools for everyone
Surrounded by the Valais Alps, Leukerbad Therme offers ten indoor and outdoor pools, ranging from approximately 28°C to 44°C. The public facility includes hydrotherapy features, wellness spaces and family-friendly pools. Hiking trails and mountain cable cars make it easy to combine thermal bathing with outdoor activities.

Bad Ragaz: Historic thermal bathing
In eastern Switzerland, Tamina Therme draws on Bad Ragaz's longstanding thermal traditions. The contemporary complex has six indoor and outdoor pools, saunas and treatments, with admission available to day visitors. During the warmer months, travelers can also visit nearby Tamina Gorge and the historic Old Bad Pfäfers bathhouse, connecting today's spa experience with the region's thermal heritage.
Note: While the Tamina Therme is a public thermal spa open to all visitors, it is seamlessly integrated into the 5-star Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. It offers a public wellness oasis directly connected to the resort’s elite hotel, golf, and dining amenities.
Montreux: Medical wellness beside Lake Geneva
Clinique La Prairie in Montreux retained its title as Switzerland's Best Wellness Retreat in 2026. The property offers structured stays combining medical assessments, nutrition, movement and spa treatments. Programs are designed for guests seeking a dedicated retreat rather than an afternoon spa visit.
Travelers should review program inclusions, medical services and total costs before booking. The award recognizes the retreat's standing within the hospitality awards program, not the clinical effectiveness of individual treatments.
