  • The Best Protein Powders: our Top Picks and How we Use Them

Protein powders are a simple and effective way to boost your daily protein intake. Whether you're aiming to build muscle, lose weight, or just maintain a healthy diet, the right protein powder can be a game-changer. Making a breakfast chocolate smoothie! Protein is an essential nutrient that helps repair tissues, produce hormones, and regulate enzymes. When you exercise, your muscles break down and require protein to rebuild and grow stronger. But with so many options on the market, how do you choose the right one? I’m particular about the protein powders I use. Some whey-based powders upset my stomach, while others cause bloating, gas, and even headaches. Through trial and error, I’ve found a handful of brands that work well for me. A Quick Note on Serving Sizes: When a recipe calls for a scoop of protein powder, I typically use only a quarter of a scoop. This prevents stomach discomfort and makes the product last longer. My Top 5 Protein Powders Vega Organic All-in-One Vegan Protein Powder (French Vanilla) Protein Content: 25g per serving Extras: 3g fiber, 0g sugar, keto-friendly, superfood ingredients, vitamins for immunity support Best for: Smooth texture and mild vanilla flavor This is my go-to protein powder, and I use it daily. I blend it with unsweetened almond milk and frozen mango—just enough natural sweetness to make it enjoyable without added sugar. No clumps, no grit—just smooth, plant-based protein goodness. Orgain Organic Vegan Protein Powder (Creamy Chocolate Fudge) Protein Content: 21g per serving Extras: 7g organic fiber, USDA organic, gluten-free, soy-free, non-GMO Best for: A rich, chocolatey flavor This one is my daughter’s favorite! Every Thursday before her school run, she has a quick breakfast shake with unsweetened oat milk and a spoonful of this powder. The chocolate flavor is indulgent without being overly sweet. I’ve heard people even use this in brownie recipes! You can find this at Costco, but I prefer buying smaller quantities to keep it fresh. Global Healing Vegan Protein Powder (Vanilla, 20 Servings) Protein Content: 20g per serving Extras: Made from pea, pumpkin, hemp, sacha inchi, and watermelon protein Best for: Nutrient-dense, clean ingredients A few months ago, someone gifted me this powder, and I have to say—it’s the healthiest one on this list. It has a slightly grainy texture and isn’t very sweet, so I recommend blending it with almond milk, strawberries, and a handful of dates. If you’re new to protein powders, this may not be the best one to start with, but seasoned protein users will appreciate its clean ingredients and lack of artificial sweeteners. Herbalife Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix (Cookies & Cream) Protein Content: 9g per serving Extras: 20 vitamins and minerals, fiber for weight management, includes bromelain and papain for digestion Best for: Meal replacement shakes One of my former students, now a fitness trainer, introduced me to this. As an Herbalife coach, he sent me a trial packet of the Cookies & Cream formula, and I was instantly hooked. I stretched one packet into three servings, and the flavor was amazing—sweet and satisfying without being overwhelming. A little goes a long way! Shakeology Protein Powder (Strawberry, 30 Servings) Protein Content: Varies per serving Extras: 70+ superfoods, probiotics, antioxidants, adaptogens Best for: Comprehensive nutrition in one shake A friend introduced me to Shakeology through Beachbody fitness, and while it’s on the pricier side, it’s worth it. It has a fantastic blend of proteins, vitamins, probiotics, and digestive enzymes. I prefer the strawberry flavor, but the chocolate and vanilla versions are equally good. Amazon sometimes offers better deals, but if you know someone with discount coupons, even better! Final Thoughts Protein powders are not one-size-fits-all. Finding the right one depends on your dietary needs, taste preferences, and digestive tolerance. These options have worked well for me, and I hope this guide helps you find the perfect protein powder for your routine. Whether you're blending them into smoothies or using them in creative recipes, the right protein can make healthy eating easier and more enjoyable. Do you have a favorite protein powder? Let me know—I’m always open to new recommendations!

  • Homemade Natural Deodorant: A Simple, Effective Recipe

Making your own deodorant with natural ingredients is easier than you might think! I’ve been doing it for nearly a decade, and I’ve never looked back. My entire family uses it now, and my husband keeps insisting I should sell it. Instead, I’d rather share the recipe so you can enjoy it too! It’s incredibly simple—I hope you give it a try. Here’s what you’ll need: Equipment: A container for mixing A spoon Measuring cups (1/4 cup and 1/3 cup) A 1-tablespoon measuring spoon Ingredients: 4 tablespoons cornstarch 1/3 cup coconut oil (warmed) 1/4 cup baking soda 1/4 cup arrowroot flour Instructions: Mix all the ingredients together until smooth. If you'd like a larger batch, simply double the quantities. I usually make enough to last about three months. I keep a small portion in a container that fits my wax burner for daily use, while the rest goes into a glass jar stored in a cool place. Give it a try—I think you’ll love it as much as we do! Helpful Tips: ✅ Avoid White Residue – Ensure your deodorant is warm with enough coconut oil to keep it smooth. This helps prevent any white marks on your clothes. ✅ Reduce Deodorant Use Over Time – Each night, spray your underarms with a mix of equal parts water and apple cider vinegar. The scent fades within 10 minutes, and over time, you’ll need less deodorant. ✅ Shave Smart – If you shave, avoid applying deodorant immediately after. It can sting or cause redness, especially if you have sensitive skin. Instead, shave your underarms the night before. Enjoy fresh, natural protection—all made by you!

  • Elevate Your Travel Experience with These Must-Have Essentials

The right travel essentials can make a significant difference in how comfortable, enjoyable, and stress-free your trip turns out to be. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or packing for your first adventure, these carefully chosen recommendations will ensure you're well-prepared for the journey ahead. Backpack A good backpack is a travel game-changer, helping you stay organized and making transit easier. Look for a bag with padded straps for comfort and multiple compartments to keep everything in its place. Our personal favorite is the Osprey Farpoint 40 , which meets domestic carry-on size requirements. Lightweight and versatile, it's perfect for both work trips and outdoor adventures. With ample compartments, it's ideal for travelers who, like us, prefer packing light—often with just carry-ons, even for extended trips. Photo Credit: Amazon - Osprey Farpoint 40 Packing cubes Packing cubes are essential for anyone aiming to keep their luggage organized. They help you categorize items, protect delicate belongings, and make packing and unpacking a breeze. For our family, packing cubes solve two persistent problems: separating dirty laundry and containing shoes. We recommend Pinzon , an Amazon brand offering a practical six-piece set. The cubes strike the right balance between quality and affordability, with durable zippers and compression capabilities to maximize space. Pinzon, Amazon brand Headphones Whether you want to block out noise, enjoy your favorite playlist, or catch a movie during a flight, a good pair of headphones is a must. Popular choices include the Bose QuietComfort 35 II , Sony WH-1000XM4 , and Sennheiser Momentum 3 . However, Beats by Dr. Dre stands out for its stylish design and impressive sound quality. With features like Bluetooth connectivity, quick charging, and powerful bass, these headphones are perfect for long journeys. Keep an eye out for sales on Amazon for great deals. Beats by Dr. Dre, on Amazon Portable chargers Never underestimate the power of a portable charger! These lifesavers keep your devices powered up on long flights, hikes, or even a busy day exploring a city. Our top pick is the INIU Power Bank , which is slim, lightweight, and compatible with both Apple and Samsung devices. It features a USB-C IN & OUT port and charges devices quickly, making it a reliable companion for any trip. INIU Power Bank, on Amazon Travel adapters Traveling internationally? A travel adapter is indispensable. Different countries use different plug types, and having a universal adapter ensures your devices stay charged wherever you go. We recommend the EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter , which covers over 150 countries and allows you to charge up to six devices simultaneously. It's compact and efficient, though it doesn't convert voltage, so avoid using it with high-power appliances. EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter, on Amazon AirTag Worried about losing your luggage? An Apple AirTag offers peace of mind by allowing you to track your bags using the Find My app on your iPhone. After experiencing misplaced luggage twice on the same trip through Heathrow, we can't recommend this enough. A set of four AirTags is available on Amazon, and they're perfect for safeguarding all your travel bags. Alternatively, consider sticking to carry-ons to avoid the hassle altogether. Apple AirTag 4 Pack on Amazon Neck pillows If you're struggling to sleep on flights, a quality neck pillow can make all the difference. Popular options include the Cabeau Evolution Pillow , Trtl Pillow , and BCOZZY Chin Supporting Travel Pillow . For a budget-friendly yet highly effective option, try the TALLGO Travel Pillow . It features memory foam, is adjustable, and supports your head, neck, and chin. Plus, it's washable for added convenience. TALLGO Travel pillow on Amazon Socks Whether it's compression socks for circulation or cozy socks for comfort, these are a travel essential. Brands like Physix Gear , Wanderlust , and FuelMeFoot are excellent for compression support. For something warm and luxurious, we love Barefoot Dreams Socks . Known for their soft, cozy fabric, they are a favorite among travelers for long flights and chilly destinations. Warm socks by Barefoot Dreams on Amazon Eye Mask An eye mask is a game-changer for red-eye flights or catching sleep on the go. The MZOO Luxury Eye Mask is a standout choice, designed with comfort and functionality in mind. Its contoured design blocks light effectively while being gentle for side sleepers. • How to Plan a Memorable Visit to the Taj Mahal in 2025

Visiting the Taj Mahal had been on our family’s bucket list for a while. As someone who grew up in India but has lived abroad for many years, I knew this trip would be both nostalgic and new for me. For my daughter, it was her first time seeing this iconic monument, and we wanted to make it a memorable experience. Taj Mahal. Photo credit: Unsplash Getting to Agra We started our journey by flying into New Delhi, the most convenient hub for international travelers. We spent the night in Delhi by the airport at the Aloft Aerocity . The next morning, after an amazing buffet breakfast at the hotel, we rented a car with a driver and made the 3-4 hour drive to Agra via the Yamuna Expressway. The roads were surprisingly good, though traffic near Delhi can slow you down depending on when you leave. Having a driver stay with us overnight was a practical decision—it made our trip more flexible and allowed us to take breaks whenever we needed. The ability to stop for chai or stretch our legs made the journey feel relaxed. We rented a car from Zed Car Rental & Lease Co. For questions, you can Whatsapp their travel desk at +91-98103.70010. For us - The cost for 2-day overnight trip (car+ driver) was under ₹20,000 (USD $235), which felt reasonable for the convenience. This trip cost covered 650 kilometers (403 miles), driver allowance, toll tax, gas and parking. We did not have to pay for the driver's food or overnight stay - he managed it himself within the allowance. Staying in Agra We chose the ITC Mughal for our stay in Agra, which turned out to be an excellent decision for our family. The hotel is spacious, comfortable, and conveniently located. Its lush gardens and inviting pool area provided a lovely respite after a long day of travel. The ITC Mughal met all our needs without breaking the bank. We paid about $250 a night that included a breakfast buffet. Our guide did mention that the Oberoi Amarvilas , the closest luxurious hotel to the Taj Mahal, with its suites offering breathtaking views of the iconic monument, is another exceptional choice. While that sounded incredible, it came with a hefty price tag at USD $1000+ a night, a two-night minimum and no breakfast included. The Taj Mahal Experience Arriving and Tickets Once in Agra, our driver parked at a designated lot, and we walked to the ticketing area. There’s an option halfway to take a golf cart to the entrance, but we decided to walk, enjoying the lively atmosphere. It’s worth noting that the area can get very crowded, so if you’re traveling with young kids or need assistance, the carts might be a better choice as long as you are willing to wait in a long line to get the ride. On our way to the Taj - after buying tickets We had arranged for our guide to purchase tickets in advance, which made things much easier. Without an Aadhar card or an Indian phone number, buying tickets can be challenging, so having a guide handle this is a good idea. The difference in ticket prices is significant—Indian passport holders and OCI cardholders pay less compared to foreign travelers. Make sure to carry enough Indian rupees for tips and incidental expenses. We paid ₹250 (USD $3) per person per OCI passport ticket - which our guide purchased for us online. For foreigners, each ticket cost $15. Kids under 15 are free. Proof of age and citizenship need to be shown. Walking Through the Gate One of the gateways to the Taj Mahal Passing through the large red sandstone gate and catching the first glimpse of the Taj Mahal is a moment that takes your breath away. It’s not just the beauty of the monument—it’s the feeling of seeing something so iconic finally materialize in front of you. My daughter’s awe and wonder made the moment even more special. It’s a sight that truly captures your attention, and we paused for several minutes just to take it all in. See our Instagram video that documents our visit to the Taj Mahal . Built by Shah Jahan as a symbol of love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, it’s a breathtaking reminder of devotion, artistry, and history. Twenty two years, thousands of artisans, and an undying legacy—this visit was a journey into a love story etched in white marble! The Main Mausoleum Inside the Taj complex, you’ll find the mausoleum, gardens, fountains and several other structures. The mausoleum itself is stunning, with intricate marble inlays and carvings that feel quite extraordinary. If you choose a ticket that allows access to the cenotaph area, you’ll see the replicas of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal’s tombs. The real graves are located underground, and you can visit them if desired—ask your guide for assistance. While the crowd inside the mausoleum can be overwhelming, we found that having a guide helped us navigate efficiently and learn about the fascinating details of the architecture and history. You can also request your guide to focus more on the Taj rather than other structures, tailoring the experience to your preferences. Looking for a guide? Feel free to reach out to our guide - Deepak Rathore: +91.97588.07729. He spoke native Hindi, fluent Spanish and OK-ish English. We got his information through a friend and we communicated with him via Whatsapp a month before our trip. He was great at arranging everything, met us at the hotel, saved us money and helped us navigate Agra! I hope he takes on a bigger role and becomes a tour operator someday - he was great at that. To Hire a Photographer or Not? We didn’t hire one of the professional photographers wandering around the Taj Mahal. Instead, our guide graciously helped us capture some family photos. While they weren’t professional-level, they turned out pretty good and felt more personal. For those seeking polished or Instagram-perfect shots, hiring a photographer could be worth considering. Entrance Gates and Security The Taj Mahal has three entrance gates: East, West, and South. As of 2025, the South Gate remains permanently closed for tourists, a change implemented after the COVID-19 pandemic. The East Gate is popular among foreign tourists due to generally shorter queues, except at sunrise. The West Gate often sees longer lines, predominantly with domestic visitors. For a smoother experience, especially during peak hours, the East Gate is recommended. Be prepared for security checks; items such as drones, tripods, food, and large bags are prohibited inside the complex. It’s advisable to travel light and familiarize yourself with the list of restricted items before your visit. Shoe Covers and Footwear Visitors are required to remove their shoes or wear shoe covers when entering the main mausoleum to preserve the marble flooring. For foreign tourists, shoe covers are included with the high-value tickets and can be collected at the entrance. However, Indian citizens may need to purchase shoe covers separately. Vendors outside the Taj Mahal offer shoe covers for a nominal price, typically around ₹20 (USD 0.25) per pair. We found it convenient to acquire these before entering. Yes - the guide paid for them and then we paid him later along with his fee of around $25 for about two hours to see the Taj. Night Viewing Opportunities Experiencing the Taj Mahal under the moonlight is a unique opportunity available only during full moon nights and two days before and after. This exclusive experience allows visitors to witness the monument bathed in the ethereal glow of the moon. However, the actual viewing time is brief, and given a choice, daytime visits are more rewarding. Tickets for night viewing are limited and must be purchased at least 24 hours in advance. Each night, eight batches of 50 visitors are allowed, with each batch allotted 30 minutes between 8:30 PM and 12:30 AM. It’s important to note that night viewing is not available during the month of Ramadan and on Fridays. Sunrise Viewing We initially considered a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal, but recent reports of fog obscuring the view made us rethink. If you do plan a morning visit, it’s better to go after 7 AM, as visibility improves significantly by then. Early mornings can also be less crowded, making for a more serene experience. Souvenirs There are spots within and around the Taj complex to buy small souvenirs, like marble miniatures and other handicrafts. While we didn’t buy anything, our guide pointed out these shops in case we were interested. If you’d like to browse, let your guide know—they can direct you to the best options. The Taj Mahal Evening Show After our visit to the Taj Mahal, we attended an evening show at 7 PM that dramatized the history and legend of the monument. While the music and dance costumes were vibrant, the acting left much to be desired. It’s an optional activity that adds variety to your trip but manage your expectations if you choose to attend. Tickets need to be purchased in advance, so plan accordingly. For language options, my daughter and I chose the English audio, which worked well for us, while my husband enjoyed the Hindi version. We paid ₹2,500 (USD $30) per ticket for the Platinum level. In retrospect, we could have chosen seats that were at Gold level - A little bit behind. See details here. The Taj Mahal is undoubtedly an experience that stays with you. For us, it wasn’t just about the beauty of the monument but also about the stories, the history, and the shared experience as a family. While there were moments of chaos and exhaustion, it was worth every bit of effort. If you’re planning a visit, go with an open mind, some patience, and the willingness to embrace the unexpected—it’s all part of the adventure.

  • Ways To Protect Your Passport While Traveling

Losing your passport on vacation could turn any getaway into a dreadful experience. The next time you set off on an international flight, store your passport in a way that’s only accessible to you. Protect your passport, keep it close by, and follow these safety tips while you’re traveling.  Use a Passport Holder or Wallet Carry around your passport at the airport using a protective passport holder or wallet. These handy accessories come with RFID-blocking technology to protect your information from digital theft.  For instance, a leather passport wallet is a leather essential everyone should own  to protect their identity during their business trips or leisure travels. As you walk through your security check, hold your passport in a secured wallet to avoid pickpockets or bends on your book.  Carry a Copy of Your Passport Before you set off on your trip, make a photocopy or take a high-resolution photo of your passport. This way, you can have a backup if you need to order a replacement at your country’s embassy. Store your photo safely on a cloud storage platform to expedite the retrieval process in case of emergency. You can also create a digital ID pass with your passport on your Google Wallet if you are in the US. Avoid Carrying It Everywhere The best way to prevent losing your passport on an international trip is by keeping it safe in your hotel room. Use the wall safe in your hotel room or invest in your own locked case to keep your passport safe. Unless you need to exchange currency or provide identification, it’s better to walk around town without it.  Use a Travel Belt or Hidden Pouch If you need to venture with your passport, travel belts or concealed pouches worn under your clothing can discreetly protect your passport while traveling. These make it much harder for pickpockets and thieves to get their hands on your important documents.  Keep It Dry and Protected Unexpected rain or accidental spills can easily ruin your passport. Use waterproof pouches or zip-lock bags if you plan on going on an outdoor adventure with your passport.  Be Mindful in Public Places With all the crowds outside of bus stations, airports, or tourist attractions, there’s bound to be thieves and pick pockets hiding in plain sight. Always stay alert and avoid placing your passport in easily accessible places like back pockets or side bags. Register With Your Embassy Preregister with your embassy  by making an account and adding your travel details online before you step foot on the airplane. Their online travel program allows you to mark your travel plans so that they can quickly assist you if your passport goes missing. Take advantage of these programs for those unexpected emergencies. For your next vacation across the sea, protect your passport by storing it in secured areas. A simple wallet or sturdy case could prevent any mishaps you may encounter during your travels. Explore your destination and return home peacefully knowing your passport is safe from danger.

  • Persian Vegan Eats in Los Angeles: Shamshiri Grill’s Flavorful Fare

Persian cuisine, with its roots stretching back thousands of years, offers an unforgettable exploration of balanced and aromatic flavors. At Shamshiri Grill in Los Angeles, this tradition meets the growing demand for plant-based dining, showcasing how Persian cooking can beautifully cater to vegan and vegetarian preferences while preserving its rich heritage. The heart of Persian cuisine lies in its thoughtful use of spices and herbs. Saffron, cherished for its delicate aroma and golden hue, plays a central role in dishes from stews to rice. Turmeric and cinnamon add warmth, while dried limes introduce a tangy depth. Fenugreek leaves contribute a mild bitterness, especially in herbaceous dishes like Ghormeh Sabzi. These spices carry cultural and medicinal significance, reflecting Persian cooking's holistic approach. Persian stews, or khoresh , are an important part of the cuisine, offering endless versatility. While many traditional khoresh recipes feature meat, vegetarian adaptations have now gained popularity. These dishes emphasize legumes, vegetables, and spices to create layers of flavor that rival their meat-based counterparts. For example, Ghormeh Sabzi, a herbaceous stew typically made with lamb, shines just as brightly in its vegan form, where fresh greens, kidney beans, and dried lime take center stage. Los Angeles has long embraced global cuisines, and Persian food is no exception. Shamshiri Grill has carved out a niche as a reliable spot for authentic Persian dishes. For vegan diners, standouts include the Vegan Bamieh, an okra stew with mushrooms in a saffron-tomato base; the Vegan Ghormeh Sabzi, brimming with fresh herbs and kidney beans; and the Vegan Falafel Platter, paired with light sides like Shirazi Salad and Tabouli. For anyone seeking to try something new, Persian cuisine offers a blend of ancient tradition and bold innovation. At Shamshiri Grill, these dishes bring the heart of Persian culinary heritage to the table, adapted thoughtfully for modern vegan tastes. • The Sphere in Las Vegas: A Must-Visit Entertainment Destination

The Sphere Experience features the world's largest and highest high-def screen, interactive robots, 167,000 speakers, films with their own weather and the world's largest holographic displays. Does this excite you? Then, read along. The Sphere in Las Vegas The Sphere, located just east of the Las Vegas Strip, is a massive entertainment complex that leaves a lasting impression. With a capacity of nearly 20,000 guests, it’s an impressive structure that dominates the Las Vegas skyline. The venue’s unique, futuristic sphere-like design makes it a standout addition to Las Vegas’ entertainment scene. At a cost of $2.3 billion, The Sphere represents an ambitious project and an investment in cutting-edge technology. Guests enter through spacious atriums via escalators and elevators, leading to stadium-style seating. For the best view, sitting in the middle sections—whether higher or lower—is recommended, as these provide the most immersive Sphere experience. Show at the Sphere During our Sphere visit, we attended the Postcard from Earth show, which was a recorded experience that felt incredibly immersive. In contrast, U2 performed live at The Sphere, and that performance has since been transformed into a recorded version that captures the energy of the live event. Both shows showcase the venue’s cutting-edge technology, delivering experiences that feel incredibly real. Throughout the atrium, we encountered robots like Aura, who engaged in conversations, asking and answering questions in a remarkably relevant and impressive way, adding another layer of innovation to the experience. Tickets are easily purchased through platforms like Ticketmaster, and mobile ticketing ensures a smooth entry. It’s best to open your mobile tickets before arriving to avoid Wi-Fi issues. At the Sphere entrance, there was security in place, so it’s best to carry only a small purse or bag for a smoother entry process. Once inside, guests move through stairways and hallways to get to their seats. The Atrium at The Sphere Getting There and Accessibility Situated at 255 Sands Avenue, reaching The Sphere is straightforward and well-marked. Parking can become busy during peak times, so arriving early is highly recommended. Paid parking lots surround the area, costing around $40. Our show start time was 7:45 PM, and we got to the venue ticket counter at 7 PM. In retrospect, we could have given us 30 extra minutes to enjoy the venue offerings. Walking from the parking lot to the venue also took some time. The Sphere is accessible via various routes. Rideshare drop-offs are conveniently located at the corner of Manhattan Street and Westchester Drive, with staff readily available to assist with directions. Parking options nearby include local garages. Accessibility features include multiple entry points, such as the Venetian pedestrian bridge for those coming from nearby resorts. Service animals are permitted, and elevators, accessible restrooms, and wheelchair transport are available. Keep in mind, however that the stadium-style seating may present logistical challenges—so best to get in touch with the staff ahead of time to get questions answered. Dining and Refreshments Dining options at The Sphere cater to Las Vegas’ reputation—offering a range of upscale lounges and casual eateries. The atrium kitchen and bar on Level 2 serves burgers and beers, while the Taphouse and Cantina provide additional options. If you arrive close to the showtime, some dining options may be limited due to the venue’s high demand. Yes - lines! Who likes standing in lines? The Show Experience A scene from the show at The Sphere What truly sets The Sphere apart is its remarkable show offerings. Postcard from Earth captivated us with its stunning visuals and immersive sound. The technology used delivers a multi-sensory experience that feels beyond what many have seen before. From realistic breezes and vibrations in your seat to awe-inspiring LED displays, The Sphere makes you feel fully part of the action. Is it worth the money? Yes. The Sphere embodies Las Vegas’ reputation for innovation and entertainment, making it a must-visit destination. With productions like The Eagles and more, there’s always something new to look forward to. Whether it’s your first visit or a return, The Sphere guarantees an unforgettable experience. • 5 Things To Remember When Renting a Yacht for Executive Retreats

For most business and executive retreats, the usual itinerary involves flights, hotels, and conference rooms. But what if you could add a splash of luxury and adventure to your next destination?  A yacht can transform this experience from mundane to memorable, offering unique views and exciting opportunities. However, you must keep some important details in mind to ensure everything goes smoothly. Here are the five most important things to remember when renting a yacht for a retreat. Defining the Purpose of Your Luxury Adventure Before hopping on board, it's crucial to define why you're renting a yacht and how this will benefit the business leaders of your company. Executive business retreats are a unique and highly effective way to encourage networking and team bonding.  Understanding the primary purpose of the outing will help you make informed decisions about the type of vessel you need, the amenities required, and the itinerary. By aligning your choice with the trip's objectives, you ensure that the yacht becomes a conducive space for achieving your business goals while also highlighting luxury. Selecting the Right Type of Vessel When determining which type of vessel will be most appropriate for your outing, consider the number of attendees, the nature of your business activities, and the amenities you'll require. A carefully chosen yacht not only enhances the experience but also helps you project the right image to your clients or colleagues. Renting a yacht is also a fantastic opportunity to invest in company branding. Consider bringing gifts such as company branded beach towels, slippers, or any other gift that would be functional for this getaway.  Also consider having your executive retreat begin with a coordinated flight to Miami, Florida to set sail on a luxury yacht. Biscayne Bay or the Amalfi Coast are both ideal locations to gather abroad and officially start this networking event.  Verify Yacht Inspections Before Setting Sail Ensuring the proper maintenance of onboard equipment is crucial for a successful and stress-free sailing experience during your luxury executive retreat. Before you even set foot on the vessel, confirm that all equipment, such as life jackets, communication devices, and navigation tools, is in excellent working order.  Learning details such as how to tell if your yacht battery is going bad  will ensure you're prepared for any issues you might face. Don't hesitate to request a thorough inspection by the rental company or, if possible, conduct a walk-through yourself to verify that everything meets safety standards.  Planning the Itinerary and Activities While the open sea offers unparalleled freedom, having a clear itinerary is crucial for maximizing productivity during your yacht trip. Plan out relevant activities and allocate time for each one.  In addition, consider incorporating leisure activities that promote relaxation and team bonding, such as swimming or fishing. Luxurious activities such as scheduled spa sessions, group meals with a private chef, and paragliding are all exciting incentives to offer. A well-planned schedule strikes a balance between work and recreation, allowing participants to rejuvenate and return to business matters refreshed and focused. Key Considerations for a Successful Nautical Outing Renting a yacht for an executive retreat offers a refreshing departure from the conventional, but there are a few things to remember to ensure the outing is a success. From choosing the right vessel to planning the perfect itinerary, each step plays a role in creating a seamless and impactful experience. By keeping these key considerations in mind, you can ensure that your nautical adventure is memorable for all attendees.

  • Chasing the Northern Lights? Here's How to see the show

The northern lights are one of the most magical, sought-after natural wonders in the world. Many people dream of seeing them in the night sky. If that’s you, we’re here to help! Get ready to chase the northern lights and see a spectacular celestial show with the following tips. Travel to an Optimal Viewing Location The northern lights have reached as far south as Italy in the past, but you can’t count on a solar storm that strong to occur during your hunt. Therefore, better your chances by traveling north! The best locations are in the arctic circle, which includes parts of Alaska, Scandinavia, and Russia. Some popular destinations include Tromsø in Norway and Swedish Lapland. However, getting close to the arctic circle is good enough if you’re chasing the northern lights during peak season. You’re almost guaranteed to see the show if you visit the following places just south of the circle: Fairbanks, Alaska Churchill, Canada Reykjavík, Iceland Remember To Visit During Peak Season As we already mentioned, going to peak locations is only half of the strategy. You also have to visit during peak viewing months. The northern lights shine brightest and most often between September and March. Nights stretch longer, and skies grow darker during these months, providing the ideal conditions for seeing and photographing the northern lights . Pro Tip Dress warmly because you will have to spend hours outdoors at night! Know What To Look For The dazzling, dancing displays of green, purple, and pink aren’t representative of the majority of aurora events. Usually, the northern lights appear as fog-like apparitions with a pale green hue. Sometimes, the fog dances, and sometimes, it simply meanders like a river through the sky. That said, seeing a bright and colorful display is extremely likely if you go to a top location during peak viewing months. If the solar storm is strong enough, the atmosphere has the right particulate composition, and the skies are clear, you will see bold ribbons of green ripping through the night sky. Be Patient One major thing that a lot of people don’t realize is that the northern lights are never guaranteed. As we mentioned, their visibility depends on location, atmospheric conditions, solar storm events, and, honestly, a bit of luck. Therefore, you shouldn’t feel discouraged if you plan your trip exactly right to maximize your viewing chances and still don’t get to witness the spectacle. This can unfortunately happen. However, there are always other opportunities. Plus, following the advice in this article will give you an extremely good shot at witnessing the spectacle. Odds are that you will get it right on the first try; you should just calibrate your expectations to the possibility of it not happening. However, if you keep trying, you will eventually see the northern lights!

  • Luscious Locks: Unveiling the Power of Herbal Remedies for Healthy Hair

There is nothing better than traditional, age-old wisdom. In many cultures, women tend to pass on the culture to their future generations, and my case is no different. I am always documenting my mom's kitchen tips and recipes and herbal remedies - This is one of those! Today's traditional home remedy is for healthy hair. India, with its rich heritage of natural remedies, has long been known for its holistic approach to wellness. When it comes to healthy hair, Indian herbal remedies have gained considerable recognition for their effectiveness and gentleness. Here is one such remedy that can help you maintain vibrant and healthy hair. What you need: 1 teaspoon curry leaf powder 1 teaspoon amla powder 1/2 teaspoon hibiscus flower powder 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel 2 teaspoons of sweet almond oil (optional) 1 tablespoon of yogurt With these ingredients, we will create a hair gel which should stay in your hair for at least 30 minutes. Start with these proportions above. My suggestion is to start small and then increase the quantity as you see fit, and if you like it. You can mix all these ingredients by hand. You can also mix all of them in a blender and turn it into an easy-to-apply paste. I recommend using the paste within 15-20 minutes. Why these ingredients? • Chit-chat with Dr. Mel

I have known Melissa for a long time now. She is physically fit and mentally strong, and I have always admired her for that. Mel is a licensed clinical psychologist and a wellness enthusiast, empowering women in building healthy mind-body connections. I am excited to share her story with all of you - read along to explore how you can follow her example and stay happy and healthy every day! Q. You have always been about fitness and wellness. What motivates you to live this lifestyle? I’ve always been an athlete. I ran track and cross country and played basketball competitively throughout my childhood into high school. I did intramural sports at the collegiate level and still run now. It’s in my DNA. As a child, being involved in sports helped to organize me and forced me to be great with time management and balance. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed that exercise and living a healthy lifestyle keeps me grounded. It’s the one thing that is predictable for me. Not to mention, exercise highs are AMAZING medicine for my mental health. It helps to decrease my anxiety, boost my mood, and just feel overall great about myself for focusing on myself. Q. Describe your fitness routine. I work out 5-6 days a week, mostly from home. I’ve also had periods where I’ve attended cycling classes once a week or run during warmer weather. I’m usually doing workouts first thing in the morning because I know as my day progresses, it’s much less likely that I will work out. But this is about knowing what works for me and I STRONGLY encourage people to be honest with themselves about what actually works for them. My routine can vary based on if I’m following a specific program or not. I LOVE intense cardio, especially HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workouts. However, it’s so important to engage in weight and resistance training, especially as I get older. So, my routine involves both throughout the week. Q. I have often seen your photos on FB where you include your kids into your fitness program. What's your secret sauce to get them so excited to participate? Yes, I love sharing my passion for fitness and health with the girls. I never force the girls to workout with me. However, they know that mommy works out regularly. They see it almost daily and I’m trying my best to model a healthy lifestyle for them. They will often ask me to join because they want to do things like me and they find the equipment or moves fascinating. Allowing kids to explore at their own pace is a great way to give them space to grow their own love for exercise and health. I even bought a couple sets of lighter weights for them to use. I also try to make it fun and encourage them while we are working out together. I will show them proper form and then let things progress organically after that. I’m their BIGGEST cheerleader and I think that’s important when your kids are joining you. This helps to boost confidence. Q. What would you recommend folks who are at home and want to start a fitness routine? I’ve been working out at home for years! It’s definitely possible to get great workouts accomplished from the comfort of home. If you’ve never worked out before or haven’t worked out in a while, I recommend easing into a workout routine. Set yourself up for success. Perhaps commit to being active a few times a week, with more intense sweat sessions at least twice. There are tons of programs out there, both free and paid, that have varying levels for beginners through advanced. My two favorites are Beachbody on Demand (BOD) and MAWARRIOR programs with Massy Arias . I love BOD because it’s only $99 a year (much cheaper than most gym memberships) and you get access to a wealth of programs, including new programs that have been created for kids. I love me some Massy Arias because her energy and vibe is just so warm and positive. Her programs include both a meal plan and workouts. Nutrition is 85-90% of your results, so having meals laid out takes a lot of the guess work out of things for you. I’ve also recently put together an awesome toolkit to help people start building their home gym. It includes things like a pull-up bar, dumbbells, resistance bands, an exercise ball, and even a sturdy folding chair. Workouts are also more fun with people. Encourage your partner to join you, ask a friend to be your accountability buddy, or join a challenge group. The program I just completed with Massy Arias had a large FB accountability group and it DEFINITELY helped me stay motivated throughout the challenge. About Dr. Mel Melissa Robinson-Brown, Ph.D (aka Dr. Mel), is a licensed clinical psychologist in NY and NJ as well as an educator, speaker, and health and wellness enthusiast. • Nourishing Your Immune System: A Guide to Immunity-Boosting Foods

In today's fast-paced world, maintaining a robust immune system is more important than ever. Supported by research from the Cleveland Clinic, Harvard Medical School, and the UNC School of Nutrition, this guide highlights the power of nutrition in keeping you healthy and resilient. A Harvard Medical School article emphasizes that our bodies thrive on balance and harmony. Achieving this requires adopting healthy living strategies such as not smoking, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, regular exercise, stress reduction, adequate sleep, and minimal alcohol consumption. The Cleveland Clinic advises against relying solely on supplements and instead recommends incorporating essential vitamins and minerals into your diet. Meanwhile, the University of North Carolina's Lineberger Nutrition program stresses the importance of adhering to the recommended dietary allowances to avoid potential negative effects on your immune system. Here’s a closer look at the key vitamins and minerals that bolster immunity and the vegetarian foods you can include in your diet: Vitamin C: Beyond citrus fruits, it’s abundant in leafy greens like spinach and kale, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, cantaloupe, grapefruit, pineapple, watermelon, strawberries, and papaya. Vitamin E: Find it in almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, vegetable oils, spinach, and broccoli. Vitamin B6: Sources include bananas, baked and sweet potatoes, spinach, avocado, pistachios, and chickpeas. Vitamin A: Carotenoids in carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, cantaloupe, squash, tomatoes, eggs, greens, broccoli, and apricots are key. Vitamin D: Fortified foods like milk, orange juice, and cereals are good sources. Folic Acid: Beans, peas, leafy vegetables, fortified whole grains, rice, and enriched bread are rich in this nutrient. Iron: Found in beans, lentils, chickpeas, fortified cereals, green peas, eggs, nuts, rice, spinach, broccoli, and kale. Selenium: Rich in garlic, broccoli, Brazil nuts, eggs, cottage cheese, beans, lentils, brown rice, and barley. Copper: Present in sunflower seeds, almonds, lentils, dried apricots, asparagus, turnip greens, mushrooms, and dark chocolate. Zinc: Get it from baked beans (opt for no added sugar), yogurt, and chickpeas. In addition, proponents of alternative medicine suggest natural immunity boosters like honey, ginger, lemon, garlic, and turmeric, which contains curcumin that helps regulate the immune system. Teas such as peppermint, green, and elderberry, along with echinacea supplements, also offer immune support. In essence, embracing an anti-inflammatory, Mediterranean-style, or plant-based diet, combined with probiotics, stress reduction, a good sleep routine, moderate exercise, and maintaining a calm, peaceful mind, provides the best defense against any virus that may come your way.

  • The Future of Fashion: Embracing Plant-Based Clothing for a Sustainable and Stylish Tomorrow

In recent years, a quiet yet profound transformation has been sweeping the fashion industry. As more of us awaken to the realities of environmental sustainability and animal welfare, the call for ethical alternatives grows louder. Among these, plant-based clothing is emerging as a trailblazing solution. Today, I invite you to explore the fascinating world of pineapple-based fashion—a development that’s set to redefine how we think about our wardrobes. Imagine this: one day soon, you’ll walk into work wrapped in the comfort of pineapple fibers. Later, you’ll attend a dinner party, a charity gala, or even a night out, all while adorned in the vibrant hues of pineapple-derived textiles. We’ll be celebrating the unique joy that this plant-based fashion brings, showcasing our pineapple shoes, flashing our pineapple bags, and donning capes that are as bright and brilliant as the fruit itself. And yes, even I, a self-proclaimed minimalist with a closet full of white shirts and black jeans, find myself captivated by this trend. Fashion has never been a priority for me—sustainability, however, is another story. The fashion industry, notorious for its substantial carbon footprint, is undergoing a much-needed shift. Among the most exciting developments is the creation of clothing from plants, including pineapples and cacti. Today, I’m thrilled to introduce you to the world of pineapple fashion. Yes, you read that right—clothes made from pineapples. Ananas Anam , a forward-thinking company, has developed an innovative natural textile called Piñatex®, crafted from waste pineapple leaf fiber. These leaves are a byproduct of existing agriculture, meaning no additional land, water, or chemicals are required for their cultivation. Moreover, this practice provides an extra income stream for farming communities, ensuring that sustainability benefits both the environment and local economies. The process behind Piñatex® begins in the Philippines, where the leaves are collected and processed to extract the fibers. These fibers are then transformed into a non-woven substrate, which is sent to Spain for finishing. The final product, a versatile textile, is distributed worldwide from Ananas Anam’s headquarters in London. I recently had the opportunity to connect with Ananas Anam, and they were eager to share their journey with me. Piñatex® was born from years of research and development, spearheaded by Dr. Carmen Hijosa, who sought a sustainable alternative to the environmental impact of leather production. What started as a solution to agricultural waste has blossomed into a movement that’s changing the face of fashion. Several designers are now incorporating Piñatex® into their collections. One such brand is Andrea Kader’s Morpho , a line that marries modern sustainability with innovative fabric manipulations. The result? Stunning garments that shine with uniqueness and style. Similarly, Mistohn (Elasme) is another brand making waves with its Piñatex® creations. Known for their commitment to cruelty-free fashion, they’ve become pioneers in using innovative fabrics, and their drape capes are turning heads. HfS Collective , an ethical and sustainable brand based in Los Angeles, also deserves a mention. Their hands-free belt bags, crafted from Piñatex®, are made in a small, family-run factory near the city. Each purchase supports women and planet-focused organizations, adding yet another layer of goodness to their already impressive ethos. Loyal Footwear , a women-run brand in Hoboken, NJ, is another standout in the world of sustainable fashion. Their shoes, made in small batches using Piñatex®, are not only chic but also a testament to what’s possible when creativity meets consciousness Piñatex® is just the beginning. As the demand for environmentally-friendly materials grows, we can expect to see more innovations in fashion—perhaps even cushions, lamps, and furniture made from pineapple leaves. And as these options become more accessible, sustainable fashion will no longer be a luxury but a mainstream choice. As we move forward, let’s celebrate the brands that are leading the way, making it possible for us to wear our values with pride. From H&M in Sweden to small designer brands around the world, the future of fashion is being shaped by those who dare to innovate. I, for one, can’t wait to see where this journey takes us. For those interested Brands such as H&M (Sweden), Matea Benedetti (Slovenia), Hugo Boss (Germany), Bego Vegan (Canada), Manavai (Chile), Momoc (Spain), Nae Vegan (Portugal), Nature (Denmark), One Step (USA), Po Zu (UK), Rombaut (France), Edun (USA), Ahimsa Collective (Australia), Artesano (USA), Camille (France), Distyled (Lithuania), Hozen (USA), Humour Noir (Germany), Insecta (Peru), and Dokmai (Rwanda) are already incorporating Piñatex® into their fashion lines. Most are small designer brands, but with any luck, we’ll see larger companies like H&M bringing plant-based fashion into the mainstream.

  • Navigating the Cereal Aisle: A Parent’s Guide to Healthier Choices

In our home, breakfast often sparks a familiar conversation about real food versus junk food. It’s a daily dialogue that begins with requests like this: Anya : "Mom, can I have BBQ chips and cookies for breakfast?" Me : "How about we start the day with some real food? Pancakes, maybe?" Anya : "Okay, but only if you add chocolate chips and lots of maple syrup." Me : "What if we skip the syrup?" Anya : "Can I have honey then? And did you buy that juice box?" Me : "How about freshly squeezed carrot juice instead?" It’s a daily battle, one I mostly win. But when it comes to cereal, the struggle is real. Recently, I began paying closer attention to the nutrition labels on my daughter’s favorite cereals. I wondered why she craves them so much, especially when she chooses cereal over waffles or boiled eggs. The answer is clear: sugar. Cereal is delicious because sugar makes almost anything taste good. My brother swears by Honey Bunches of Oats. My nephew loves Lucky Charms. My daughter alternates between Froot Loops and Frosted Flakes. And I’ve had my own love affair with Special K with strawberries. But last year, I decided it was time to break up with my beloved cereal brand—and I encouraged my daughter to do the same. In today’s post, I want to share what I’ve learned on our journey to find healthier cereal options for our family. First, let me introduce you to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit organization I trust. Not long ago, EWG conducted an analysis of 1,500 cereals, including 180 aimed at kids. Their research revealed that a child who eats just one bowl of cereal daily for a year consumes up to 10 pounds of sugar. That statistic was a wake-up call. Based on their findings, we switched to unsweetened Cheerios. While we do miss the sugar, adding a little honey to our milk has helped curb our cravings. It wasn’t easy to convince my daughter at first, but over time, she’s adjusted—slowly but surely. She’s been such a trooper, but honestly, if she’d never been introduced to sugary cereals in the first place, we wouldn’t be in a position where she feels she’s had to compromise. And that’s on us. We fell for the marketing. Over the last 30-40 years, packaged foods have been marketed so effectively to kids and parents alike—it’s no wonder they’ve been so successful. And let’s not forget the cool cartoon characters on the boxes. Remember Tony the Tiger? I dread taking my daughter to the store because I’m always afraid she’ll reach for the most colorful box with the coolest character. I hate to admit it, but sometimes I crave my favorite sweet cereal too. Today, we’re facing a generation of kids who are almost addicted to sugary, high-fructose processed foods. It’s a significant contributor to rising childhood obesity rates. How I wish broccoli had the same kind of marketing power! I’m practical, and I don’t believe in saying no to everything. I don’t plan to say no to cereal entirely, either. My advice is to read the labels carefully, and pay attention to serving sizes. Here’s what you should know to make the right choice for your family: the serving size on most cereal boxes is so unrealistic that even sugar-conscious consumers end up consuming far more sugar than they intend. Some cereals tout "Meets Daily Fiber Requirement" on their boxes, prompting purchases—but this can be misleading given the high sugar content. This article from EWG is an excellent resource to reference. Over the last decade, the cereal industry has focused on self-regulation. The problem is that there’s no consistency when it comes to serving sizes, which confuses consumers like us. For example, is there a difference between a "single serving" and a "suggested serving size"? Are we feeding our kids more cereal than what’s recommended? Even as an educated person, I find the sugar content on nutrition labels confusing. What we need is stronger regulation. Can standardized metrics for sugar content be adopted? Can we reduce sugar content to the recommended <6g/serving target used by the WIC program instead of the <9g/serving we see on so many boxes? Until changes are made, be a discerning consumer. Flax Seeds: A Superfood with Surprising Benefits Flax, a blue-flowering plant that thrives in cool climates with long daylight hours, has been cultivated for centuries. While Canada accounts for 40% of the world’s flaxseed production, these tiny seeds were historically used in textiles before making their way into our diets. The health benefits of flax seeds have been recognized since the time of Hippocrates. Though I didn’t grow up consuming flaxseeds, their remarkable properties convinced me to incorporate them into my daily routine. I now frequently grind the seeds, harnessing their incredible nutritional power. The Healing Power of Flax Seeds Ground flaxseeds are more than just a trendy health food; they can outperform medicines in treating various ailments. They’re celebrated for their high content of healthy omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and particularly lignans—a compound that makes flax seeds stand out. What Are Lignans? Lignans are phytoestrogens, plant compounds that mimic estrogen in the body. They can modulate the effects of your body's natural estrogen, which is why flax seeds are often recommended for alleviating menstrual breast pain. In the book How Not To Die by Dr. Michael Greger and Gene Stone, several studies underscore the value of incorporating flax seeds into our diets. The Benefits of Flax Seeds Cancer Prevention: Flax seeds are known for their role in reducing the risk of both breast and prostate cancers. Breast Cancer: Consuming a tablespoon of ground flax seeds daily can extend a woman’s menstrual cycle by about a day, potentially reducing her lifetime exposure to estrogen and lowering her breast cancer risk. Prostate Cancer: Lignans in flax seeds have shown promise in slowing the growth of prostate cancer cells in lab studies. Flaxseeds offer a safe, cost-effective nutritional option that may reduce tumor proliferation rates. Cardiovascular Health: Flax seeds are a powerful ally in reducing blood pressure and improving heart health. Blood Pressure: Just a few tablespoons of ground flax seeds daily can significantly lower blood pressure—2-3 times more effectively than aerobic exercise alone (although combining both is best!). Cholesterol and Blood Sugar: Flax seeds help control cholesterol, triglyceride, and blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation, and even treat constipation. How to Consume Flax Seeds To maximize their benefits, always grind flax seeds before eating them. Whole seeds will pass through your system without offering nutritional value. Taste: Flaxseed powder has a light, nutty flavor, making it a versatile addition to many dishes. Usage Ideas: Sprinkle ground flax seeds on cereals, salads, or soups. Bake them into muffins or make homemade crackers and bars. Blend them into smoothies. Replace eggs in baking (1 egg = 1 tablespoon of flaxseed powder mixed with 3 tablespoons of water). • Is Your Morning Cup of Coffee Really Just One Cup?

Let’s say you wake up every morning with a cup of coffee, tea, or soda in hand, relying on that familiar jolt of caffeine to jumpstart your day. But have you ever asked yourself: How much caffeine did you actually consume? Is it OK to have that second cup? Do you notice any differences in how you feel before and after your caffeine fix—whether it’s a sense of calm, happiness, or just feeling more awake? I started pondering these questions after my husband mentioned last week that he didn’t feel the need for a second cup of coffee on Friday when he indulged in a Starbucks ‘Grande’ 16 oz coffee instead of his usual office machine brew. Curious, I dove into the world of caffeine consumption. This post is also dedicated to a couple of my students who power through their busy weeks with energy drinks, chocolate protein shakes, and Starbucks coffee brimming with espresso shots. I hope they reconsider their caffeine intake after reading this. So, How Much Caffeine is Too Much? The Mayo Clinic suggests that up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine per day appears to be safe for most healthy adults. That’s roughly equivalent to: Four cups of brewed coffee Ten cans of cola Two energy shot drinks For pregnant women, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends keeping caffeine intake below 200 mg/day. So, for a healthy, non-pregnant adult, are four cups of brewed coffee really okay? Well, not so fast. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), caffeine content can vary significantly across different beverages and brands. In other words, not all coffees are created equal. The caffeine in Starbucks Coffee isn’t the same as that in Dunkin, Blue Bottle, Folgers, or Maxwell House. Caffeine Content: It’s All in the Details The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes that the caffeine content in brewed beverages can fluctuate depending on factors like where the coffee beans or tea leaves were grown and processed, how the beverage is prepared, the type of coffee bean, roast style, and serving size. Here’s a quick comparison: Dunkin' Donuts Coffee (20 oz): About 400 mg of caffeine Starbucks Coffee Blonde Roast (16 oz): 360 mg Brewed Green or Black Tea (16 oz): 80 mg Decaf Coffee (8 oz): 2-15 mg No wonder my husband didn’t need another cup—his daily caffeine intake was already maxed out with that one Grande Starbucks coffee. Sodas, Energy Drinks, and More: Caffeine Is Everywhere Like coffee and tea, sodas and energy drinks also vary widely in caffeine content. Here’s what you might find in your favorite drinks: Pepsi Zero Sugar (10 oz): 75 mg Diet Coke (10 oz): 23 mg 5-hour Energy (2 oz): 200 mg Red Bull (8.4 oz): 80 mg Many nutritional or fitness shakes are also loaded with caffeine. For example: Ensure Mocha (8 oz): 100 mg Kellogg’s Cappuccino Protein Shake (10 oz): 100 mg Vitaminwater Energy Tropical Citrus (20 oz): 50 mg Odwalla Chai Vanilla Protein Shake (12 oz): 50 mg Even energy snacks like Clif Shot Energy Gel, Awake Caffeinated Chocolate, and Gu Energy Gels pack a caffeinated punch. If you’re indulging in coffee-flavored ice cream, coffee yogurts, or chocolate drinks, you’re likely consuming about the same amount of caffeine as in a cup of tea. Should You Rethink Your Caffeine Habit? Everyone’s tolerance to caffeine varies. If you experience migraines, headaches, upset stomachs, rapid heartbeats, muscle tremors, jitters, or insomnia, it might be time to cut back on caffeine. Additionally, it's essential to consider that caffeine can linger in your system longer than you think—up to 10 hours for some individuals. Interestingly, between chocolate, soda, and chocolate milk, our kids (ages 2-19) are consuming far more caffeine than they did 40-50 years ago, albeit in smaller doses. As they grow older, they’ll likely add coffee and tea to the mix, increasing their overall caffeine intake. It’s crucial for us to understand the effects of caffeine on our bodies, especially considering the younger generations. Caffeine is water- and lipid-soluble, easily crosses the blood-brain barrier, and can be found in all body fluids. While it can increase alertness and wakefulness, excessive consumption can lead to elevated blood pressure and increased heart rate. Excess caffeine consumption is increasingly recognized as potentially harmful, even at doses that were previously considered safe. Alcohol and Caffeine: A Dangerous Mix Mixing alcohol with caffeine is particularly dangerous. Caffeine can mask the depressant effects of alcohol, leading you to drink more than you realize, increasing the risk of alcohol poisoning and other alcohol-related injuries. Products that tout pure or highly concentrated caffeine in powder or liquid forms should be avoided entirely. The FDA has issued warnings against these products due to their potential for misuse and overdose. A Closer Look at the Experts Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) - Founded in 1971, the CSPI is one of the oldest independent, science-based consumer advocacy organizations. It provides practical advice on nutrition, food safety, and health to consumers. Talk show host Oprah Winfrey called their Nutrition Action Health Letter "the master-mind critic that sounded the food alarms." You can sign up for their free health tips on their website. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) - The FDA is responsible for protecting public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, and medical devices. It also ensures the safety of the nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. Mayo Clinic - The Mayo Clinic is a nonprofit organization committed to clinical practice, education, and research, providing expert, whole-person care to everyone in need of healing. The Bottom Line Understanding your caffeine consumption is key to managing its effects on your health. The next time you reach for that extra cup of coffee, soda, or energy drink, take a moment to consider how much caffeine you’ve already had—and whether you really need that extra boost. By being mindful of your caffeine intake, you can enjoy the benefits without experiencing the downsides.

  • Embarking on a Flavorful Culinary Adventure: Celebrating Culture, wellness and Tradition with SHEF

Home cooked meals? Wellness. In a world where flavors transcend borders and cherished memories are etched onto each dish, SHEF emerges as more than just a digital food delivery service. Tailored for the discerning palates of devoted food enthusiasts and families eager to celebrate their authentic heritage, SHEF creates a bridge between cultures and kitchens. As I delve into the heart of this culinary phenomenon, I find its roots intertwined with the resilience of immigrant communities, where the preservation of culture often finds its last bastion in the realm of food. A pertinent illustration of this concept arises from my own doctoral thesis and my work with Cook Aunty . Here is where I discovered a profound interplay between culture and the immigrant experience, specifically highlighting how the baton of cultural identity is passed down through generations, with food often emerging as a steadfast vessel for these cherished traditions. It's in this context that SHEF's significance resonates. With the platform connecting individuals with home chefs who ardently uphold their culinary heritage, SHEF becomes a dynamic thread in the tapestry of cultural continuity. Launched in 2019, SHEF is currently in several markets including NYC, Houston, Chicago, Seattle, Boston, LA, DC, Atlanta and more. See the list here . The company offers a delectable array of cuisines, ranging from Italian and Indian to Mexican and beyond. Review the list of authentic global cuisines. Join me as I delve into a conversation with Joey Grassia, the visionary catalyst propelling SHEF's mission forward along with his business partner, Alvin Salehi. Discover the heartwarming journey that breathed life into this culinary haven, and learn about how it is revolutionizing our approach to food in everyday life! Komal: Could you provide insights into the underlying inspiration that drove the establishment of your business? Joey: My journey to create a more inclusive food system began when I lost my mom over a decade ago. I am a first-generation Italian American, so family and food were both important growing up, as was the idea of building a better future for our family and those around us. From a young age, I felt immense gratitude for the opportunities I had because of my parents, as well as a sense of responsibility to extend these opportunities to as many people as possible. The path to pay it forward was unclear until my mother passed away in 2010. I fell into a bit of soul-searching and kept coming back to the importance of food, both the role it plays in communicating culture and identity, as well as its impact on well-being, something I experienced firsthand after being hospitalized due to my diet in college. For me, everything since then has been a way of honoring my mom. There's no better way to honor her than by empowering other amazing women to share their passion for food and earn a meaningful income doing what they love. Komal: Amidst the proliferation of online food delivery services, what distinct attributes differentiate your business and position it as a compelling and distinctive choice? Joey: We did not start Shef to compete with other food delivery companies; we started the company to empower talented cooks like our own mothers - to enable them to share their culture and food for the first time. Unfortunately, prior to Shef, this opportunity was unavailable to most. It costs, on average, $300,000 to open a restaurant, and there are myriad challenges that make a brick-and-mortar facility out of reach for most people. Shef creates a cost-effective way for amazing cooks to share their food with others and get their start in the food industry. Shef currently supports thousands of shefs around the country! 85% of shefs on our platform are women, and 80% are people of color. Shef invests time and effort into working with people who haven’t had access to opportunities to share their incredible, authentic cuisine with others! The result for consumers is something magical. The quality and types of dishes you find on Shef are unlike any other service. Most shefs are cooking recipes that have been handed down through generations, and they are preparing them meticulously for each individual consumer, using the freshest ingredients and cooking each dish in small batches. As a result, the quality and flavor is far beyond what you find anywhere else. Komal: What criteria guides your process of choosing and integrating home chefs into your platform? Which qualities or skills are prioritized to ensure a varied and top-tier culinary assortment? Joey: Alvin & I started Shef to honor our own mothers and the homemade meals that shaped our childhoods. The platform has grown into a place where passionate chefs everywhere can earn a meaningful income by sharing their own handcrafted recipes. Anyone interested in joining Shef can visit our site's “Become a Shef” page where they will work directly with our team to ensure they have the support they need to get their business up and running - from food safety requirements to menu formulation and marketing. Once shefs are approved and live, our team provides ongoing support, coaching and marketing help to ensure that shefs can hone their business and grow. Komal: Can you share a particular case where a customer's experience with a dish prepared by one of your featured home chefs had a lasting impact? Joey: Many of the dishes on our platform are recipes passed down through generations, so we often receive heartfelt notes from consumers trying a dish for the first time in years- in many cases, for the first time since their mother or grandmother made it for them. I had this exact experience when I flew out to launch Shef in New York in 2020. I connected with one of our first Shefs in New York named Gessica. She had recently immigrated from Italy with her husband. We started talking about braciole, my favorite Italian dish and one that has been close to my heart since my mother made it for us growing up. It’s also a dish that you’ll never find at an Italian restaurant because of the amount of time and care it takes to make. Turns out, she makes braciole for her husband every week and I asked her to add it to her menu. When it came time to launch, I called my dad to tell him about Gessica, and he ended up ordering braciole for the entire Shef team in New York. There’s a bit of an embarrassing video of me tearing up as I was eating it. It was just like my mom’s, right down to the sauce, and it was one of the most memorable meals I’ve ever had. That’s the experience we want to give to our customers, allowing them to more deeply experience their daily meals, whether they are rediscovering a taste of home or exploring something entirely new. Komal: Looking ahead, what exciting developments or expansions do you envision for your business? Joey: Our focus right now is nationwide expansion. We currently deliver to nearly 700 cities across the country, but every state has different regulations when it comes to food preparation and delivery. Our top priority is making sure every meal delivered exceeds the utmost food safety standard, which means a slow and steady race to empower talented food entrepreneurs across all 50 states. There are incredibly talented cooks in every community in this country, and we want to ensure every one of them has access to this opportunity. With SHEF, the culinary experience becomes a celebration of roots, a communion of cultures, and a testament to the enduring legacy of flavors that unite us all. I love discovering & supporting the local cooks in my area and I think you will too! Here's $20 off to try it ($10 off first 2 orders) when you order using my link: https://shef.com/refer/greenseashellsl How to order: Head to Shef.com and enter your zip code! The delivery date will automatically be set to the soonest possible option—in as little as 24 hours! • Unveiling the Path to Instant Happiness in Everyday Life - Five simple ideas!

I am always looking for things that make me smile or warm my heart. This list below keeps on changing every few months. Here is the most current list :) Laughter Yoga Laughing voluntarily is often considered an exercise, believe it or not! It is also considered to have the same benefits as spontaneous laughter. It is playful, fun, healing and so great for our body! It prepares your brain for happiness! Laughter (or Hasya Yoga as it is called in Sanskrit) is often done in groups but you can always just find a YouTube video and join the fun in your own private space if you prefer that. A nice glass of Vino with friends Grape juice may be healthier but you have to admit that wine has some definite social benefits! Drinking with friends is the best thing ever. It also boosts your self-confidence and relaxes you enough to have a heart-to-heart conversation. Choose reds like Malbecs, Pino Noirs, Syrah or Cabs and if possible, choose organic. Drink wine along with some sheep cheese like Manchego and to that, add simple olive oil and rosemary crackers and a sour cherry spread. Oh, yum. Ride a bike down the slope Wheeeee! Down the hill we go...Cycling is great for your body and mind. If you get tired riding a bike, find yourself an e-bike, which is a breeze to ride...literally! A ride by yourself is good time alone. It also reduces stress, is low impact and good for the environment. Most importantly, it is good for you! All that wind on your face and in your hair is likely to make you smile. Dance like no one is watching! Some of us dance because we enjoy it more than exercise. Create a little private space (could be your bedroom, closet or bathroom), put on some music (on your phone, maybe?) and dance away for instant happiness! Dance is said to release dopamine which is great for both physical and mental wellness. It is also liberating! Mirrors make you pose so choose a room without mirrors! Add a disco light to a dark room to create an interesting ambiance. Light a candle or two. Candles are soul soothing. Smells such as rosemary, lemon and jasmine create happy and positive energy. Candle light makes one reflect and focus and sometimes help us achieve a state of calm. The best kind of candles to buy are clean burning with beeswax, cotton wicks and pure essential oil. Tea light candles give us the same pleasure as the big jar ones. Be safe and happy.

  • Unlocking the Secrets of Living a Joyful Life

My husband introduced me to Pushkin Industries, a collaboration between Jacob Weisberg and Malcoln Gladwell. In their podcast, Revisionist History , Malcolm introduced listeners to The Happiness Lab , a podcast series created by Dr. Laurie Santos, Professor of Psychology and Head of Silliman College at Yale University. Dr. Santos is an expert on human cognition and the cognitive biases that impede better choices. I listened to a 42-minute episode of the Happiness Lab and absolutely loved it. Via scientific research, Santos shares surprising stories that alters the way we think about happiness. She makes us wonder if our intuitions about what will make us happy, like winning the lottery or the Olympic silver medal are wrong. She says, our minds are programmed in a way that makes it hard for us to actually enjoy the wonderful things are already have. Santos explains the science of reference points and the psychology of alternate realities. She suggests that as humans, we tend to compare ourselves with other people and measure our happiness against those benchmarks. In the end, she offers ways to be happy by recommending changes to our mental habits. It's a really a great listen. Check it out.

  • Sights and Sounds of Pasadena

I have been in Los Angeles for four years but I never had the chance to explore Pasadena. We had a few hours of a summer Saturday last month and we needed to find a way to check out a city with mostly driving and a lot of social distancing. So, Pasadena, it was. First, lets start here. Pasadena is part of the San Gabriel Valley. Although it is a bit suburban, the downtown is pretty big and lively. Pasadena is an old city and parts of it definitely smell like old money. Historically, it was a place for the wealthy, so let that not surprise you. The one thing we do when we want to explore an area is drive through town. Our first stop was the Huntington Gardens and Library. Given COVID, we needed reservation to get in but we knew that we needed a whole day to enjoy the property, so that was not on the agenda anyway. But, it is totally worth a visit and we will need to check it off our list some day. Here is a snapshot of what their website looks like: The area around Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens is pretty posh. We saw the fancy Langham Huntington Hotel on the way as well as the Huntington hospital. There are roads named after the Huntington family everywhere in Pasadena - This family is known for its wealth, art and library collection and philanthropy for several hundred years. The city has some interesting employers like Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena City College, Parsons, Avon, AT&T etc. We even saw the campus of the prestigious private school, Polytechnic. Then there is a row of what is called the Millionaire Mile (Orange Grove Blvd) which has a row of mansions (Georgian / French / Swiss architecture). Some of those mansions are now converted into condos or museums. If this interests you, look up and visit the Gamble House, the Denham House, the Fenyes mansion and the estate of Hulett C Merritt. Find the American Red Cross building which was owned by John Cravens of Light and Myers Tobacco. One of the buildings we decided to visit was the Wrigley's Mansion which is now the official HQ of the Tournament of Roses. There were roses at the back, and beautiful lawn in the front with palm trees. Quite pretty, actually. And here come the roses! These are mostly hybrid varieties so it is unlikely that you have seen them in a store! Here's me at the mansion, which is currently closed, but the grounds are open. And Anya had fun collecting mushrooms when we were there. What fun! The one thing you would notice on a fun drive like ours are the mid-century houses in Pasadena. Some look super modern with Japanese influences - many were built around the 1960s, some earlier. Kids would find the fork in the road interesting, but be careful because it is so small that you might miss it! Another thing you may see on your drive is a bridge called the Colorado Street Bridge. The story goes that the bridge was a popular suicide spot so now they have a high metal net that would make it nearly impossible to jump off it. In any case, look at the sides of this bridge when you are there, it's a huge structure. Before you make your way down to Old Pasadena, definitely drive by the City Hall and the Jackie and Mack Robinson Memorial. The City Hall is a nice piece of architecture, probably influenced by 1920s architecture. The memorial is basically a huge outdoor sculpture of Jackie who was a baseball player and his brother Mack, an Olympic track athlete. Old Pasadena is beautiful. It reminds me of downtown NYC, near Wall Street. The Pasadena Old Town is full of restaurants, bars, cafes. There are parking lots that make exploration easier. You will find shops such as Anthropologie, Apple, Athleta, Banana Republic, Blick Art Materials, Crate & Barrel, etc. A place called Blind Donkey seemed interesting - We were so tempted to go there, but with a kid, a bar didn't seem like the most exciting place to visit. A few places like the Gold Bug were closed. We saw a loud political car rally when we were there - but people didn't seem bothered by all the honking. Next to this restaurant was a cobblestone street called Kendall Alley which has been around since 1930s. It has been featured in films such as Pulp Fiction, The Sting and Live Free or Die Hard. Eventually, we decided to eat at this spot called Luggage Room. We choose this place because the restaurant actually used to be a luggage room (it is next to the train station!) and they have kept that decor, which is really cool. Food was okay, it would have been nice to sit inside but right now, one has to be super careful. I thought it was a good three hours of exploration, and time well spent. I know we will be back for the Huntington Gardens and also to check out a family owned Cactus store which unfortunately closes early in the afternoon.

  • DTLA Arts District (in pictures)

Downtown Los Angeles has some of the best graffiti and murals in Los Angeles. Of course, the scene is ever green and ever changing so the murals come and go. Yesterday, we made our way to DTLA to see some of the awesome murals around Traction Avenue, Mateo Street, Alameda Street, 3rd and 4th St. On this page, you will see the different murals around town in June 2021 as well as information that will help you navigate the district, should you decide to visit. Before you go, you must know that DTLA is not the most family-friendly place and there aren't many things for kids to do. Also, I will suggest that you leave the area before dark. DIRECTIONS: We put Art District Brewery (828 TRACTION AVENUE, LOS ANGELES, CA 90013) in Google Maps and started our journey. Another option is to put KTCHN DTLA (428 S. Hewitt St Los Angeles, CA 90013). I am suggesting these two spots because you are likely to find parking near these areas. I personally love street art - It makes me feel alive! Art reflects life so... much of the art you see showcases life excesses, traumas, stark realities, socio-political movements and love. Street art is also a great way for artists to express themselves. Remember that murals are often created without any grids so, given the quality of the depictions, we are talking about some real talent here! As you walk around the Arts District neighborhood, you will notice that old buildings have been converted in artist residences. Every Thursday, a non-profit organization called Downtown Art Walk organizes Art Walk , a self-guided experience of local galleries, artist studios and cultural events. Visit their website (https://www.downtownartwalk.org) to explore this as things changed during the pandemic. It is easy to spend half a day in the Arts District. There are a ton of places to eat and drink here. Groundwork Coffee is fantastic (try the Venice option). Across is the Art District Brewery, if you fancy a game arcade with your beer. Angel Brewery has been around for ever. Urth Cafe and Cafe Gratitude are the best vegetarian options. Pizzanista! is good for pizza and casual late night drinks. Paratta and Sixth+Mill Pizzeria and Bar are some other suggestions. With creativity comes innovation. The La Kretz Innovation Campus is all about clean teach innovation in Los Angeles, and it is an inclusive resource where LA startups get access to better planet initiatives. The Wisdome is LA's first and largest immersive art and music dome park and it is right here in DTLA. The League of Shadows (P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S) is a dramatic and permanent graduation space for SCI-Arc architecture school students (3-cube black structure). Art Share LA is an affordable housing building in the district that provides equitable access to artists, giving them a creative environment to live, work, develop and perform. They have events and exhibits that you can enjoy post-pandemic. Finally, a cool thing to note. Twice a year, there is an amazing event that takes place inside the industrial lofts that were once owned by the LA Brewing Company and the Edison Electric Steam Power Plant. Each of the those lofts is actually an artist home! The Artwalk takes place in the Spring and Fall, 11:00 am – 6:00 pm, and admission is free. Find their website here: http://art.breweryartwalk.com/about

  • Review: Boy & The Bear (Redondo Beach)

If coffee and tea went on a date, it would look like this... Coffee would pull a Gibraltar. Pretty design, hot and sexy cup. Rose to impress. To impress coffee, Tea would easily opt to be Earl Grey. Delicate with a dash of sweet agave. Present herself with such ingenuity... how would coffee ever forget her? These pictures are from the Boy & The Bear , a local cafe and coffee roastery. They have three locations - The Black Store, the Grey Store and the White Store. The one we visited was the Black Store which is in Redondo Beach, CA. Their coffee is grown and harvested in Columbia. While parking can be tricky, once you are all situated, you will really enjoy the laid-back ambiance and their offerings. Note: This is not a sponsored post. This local cafe is really quite wonderful and cozy, check it out!

  • Fall in love with Tunisian food at Barsha in Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles

Be prepared to fall in love with Tunisian food at Barsha! Owned by Adnan who also owns the Barsha wine shop on Sepulveda in Manhattan Beach, this restaurant is worth visiting. On your visit, order a 'dips' appetizer and be served in a Hamsa , a Bohemian-looking ceramic serving platter. ( Berber : ⵜⴰⴼⵓⵙⵜ Tafust, Arabic : خمسة‎ khamsah, Hebrew : חמסה‎ khamsah). It is derived from the word, Khamsah an Arabic word that means "five", but also "the five fingers of the hand" Traditionally, the Hamsa has been used as an amulet that protects from the evil eye and is popular across the Maghrebi region and the Middle East. On our last visit, we ordered a bunch of things. They have a ton of vegetarian options and things can definitely made vegan, if you request. Their appetizer platter, served in the Hamsa platter had olive tapenade, pesto, harissa, olives and hummus. You MUST order this, it all goes great with their wines. I would suggest trying out their specials, we ordered their special Tunisian bruschetta which was vegetarian and just delicious. They substituted hummus for mayo to veganize one of the two Falafel sliders that just melted in our mouth. Our daughter ordered the Mac and Cheese with Zaatar fries, which was tasty. The chickpea stew with feta had strong tangy flavors. Seating is both inside and outdoors, with heaters. Dogs are allowed outside. Reservation is strongly recommended. We tried a walk-in and they had a two-hour wait. On our last visit, we got a table at 8:30 PM! But the food and wine is great, beautiful music and ambiance and just the best staff. Add it to your must-try list of restaurants! Website: https://www.barshalife.com Address: 1141 Aviation Blvd, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254 Closed Mondays and Tuesdays, Open Wednesdays - Sunday 5 PM - 9 PM Has live music! • Empowering Health and Well-Being: The Power of Daily Routines and Journaling

In our busy lives, staying healthy can feel like a challenge. But with a few intentional habits and capturing our thoughts on paper, we might just find a way to reflect and boost our happiness! You might have heard of Timothy Ferriss—if not, let me tell you, his ideas come up all the time around here! We’re big fans of his morning and evening routines, and his journaling tips are a favorite. Interested? Give them a try! Here’s what you need: A positive mindset in the morning. A journal and a reflective attitude in the evening. Here’s a routine I follow, inspired by Ferriss: Morning Routine: Get Moving: Do ten reps of any exercise. It could be 10 jumps, 10 push-ups, or 10 yoga moves like Talasan or Surya Namaskar. Coffee or Tea: Choose between green or black tea, Indian tea with milk, or coffee. I love coffee with Laird Hamilton vegan creamer. Meditate for Five Minutes: Sit up in bed, close your eyes, and focus on your breathing. If you prefer an app, Headspace's free version is great for this. Evening Journaling: Three Things I’m Grateful For: For example: I’m thankful I went for a walk on the beach this morning. Living by the beach is a blessing, and today’s walk was made even better by good company. My brother’s rib has been hurting, but sending positive vibes seems to have helped, and he’s feeling better. I’m grateful for his improved health. It drizzled today—rare in Los Angeles. I’m grateful for the change in weather! I Am (Affirmations): Content and satisfied with what life has given me. Happy to have finished all my grading for the week. Proud of myself for staying calm with my daughter this morning as we rushed to school. Three Things That Made Today Great: Writing two blog entries and making progress on my blog. Encouraging at least two people to join the SpeakerPost community. Looking forward to a nice glass of wine and a good dinner tonight. Tim Ferriss has a blog, a podcast, and several books. Check out more about him here: Tim Ferriss Blog.
